Chapter 25
“You’re wrong about that, Roxy!” Sylvia said as she came over to stand beside Ashton and puff her chest out.
“If Mr. Carter and his men are willing, they’re more than welcome to join me at Evermore Group. The doors will always be open for them. They’ll receive better pay and benefits than what they got at Summit Group, too!”
Sylvia genuinely hoped Isaac and his men would join her company. With their skills and connections, they’d make her stronger and even more formidable. Plus, it would mean she and Ashton were bound together.
Roxy scoffed, her expression unpleasant. “We’re leaving!”
Calvin trailed closely behind her. “Roxy, it’s not worth being angry over someone like Ashton! From now on, he’s no longer from the same world as us. We are officially from two different spheres of society. Sooner or later, he’ll walk down the path of ruin!”
“Mm–hmm.”
“Let’s go and celebrate! I’ve made a restaurant reservation and even got a bottle of vintage wine from my house. Today, we’ll only focus on leisure and matters of the heart,” Calvin declared with an affectionate look.
“From this day onward, nothing can keep us apart.”
He was practically giddy with triumph. He had already made up his mind. Tonight, he’d get Roxy in bed and claim her as his own. Then, he’d edge her out of Summit Group, seize control of the company, and take possession of the entire Sloan family fortune.
“With you by my side, Calvin, I feel so much more at ease,” Roxy said.
She exhaled heavily before forcing herself to flash a smile at Calvin. Yet, for some reason, she didn’t feel the sense of bliss and jubilation she thought she would. In fact, she felt an emptiness instead.
Just then, a luxury car screeched to a stop beside Roxy, its tires leaving marks on the road. The door flew open, and Robert rushed out in a panic.
“Roxy! We’ve got a problem!”
Roxy’s heart sank as she asked, “What happened?”
“Mom’s stomach disorder flared up again. She’s in a ton of pain right now!”
“How can that happen? I thought she was doing fine all along. Has Dr. Eric Upton, the family doctor, come to check on her yet?” Roxy exclaimed, her expression alarmed.
Tanya had always suffered from a severe stomach illness. When it struck, the cramps were unbearable. She couldn’t eat a thing without vomiting it back up.
Things only improved when Roxy and Ashton got together. He treated Tanya with acupuncture and prepared a type of medication that eased her condition.
For the past ten years, Tanya’s condition had remained under control without any flare–ups. It’d gotten to the point that even Roxy herself had forgotten that Tanya was suffering from a painful stomach disorder.
“Dr. Upton came to check on Mom, but he could only prescribe her some painkillers. There was nothing else he could do. Even after taking the painkillers, Mom’s still in a lot of pain. She was dry heaving when I left.
“She told me to find Ashton at once to get more of the medication for her. Only the medicine he prepared for her can calm her stomach!” Robert said hurriedly.

“Where’s the medication he prepared in the past?” Roxy asked, feeling rather frustrated.
Why did things have to circle back to Ashton again? Why had problems kept cropping up ever since she and Ashton filed their divorce paperwork?
“Well, we were so preoccupied with getting you to divorce Ashton that we forgot to get him to prepare more of Mom’s medication. When the pain hit today, we looked for the medication, only to find that it had run out,” Robert explained.
“Anyway, let’s not talk about this right now, Roxy. Where’s Ashton? If we don’t get the medication, Mom’s going to die of pain!”
“Ashton… is over there,” Roxy said as she pointed in Ashton’s direction.
Robert turned to look, and his eyes lit up when he saw Ashton.
“Wait for me, Roxy!”
He jogged over to Ashton and demanded, “Hey! Where’s the medication you prepared for Mom? Hurry up and give me some.”
