Chapter 33
Roxy also knew that if Ashton found out she’d lost Celia, he would be even more determined to fight her for custody of Celia.
“Ashton is very capable-”
“What is he even capable of? Stop talking to me about this. I’ll just send more people out to look for Celia,” Roxy snapped, feeling rather frustrated.
Meanwhile, over at Paramount Hospital, Edward was saying, “Ms. Langley, Mr. Gray, Madam Lowe’s condition has stabilized. There’s nothing wrong with her now. She can be discharged anytime.
“Overall, she’s in fairly good health. There shouldn’t be any major problems going forward, so long as she doesn’t experience any more major emotional distress.”
“Thank you, Dr. Hopkins.”
“Not at all, Ms. Langley. If there’s nothing you need, I’ll excuse myself now.”
After escorting Edward to the door, Sylvia came back to Ashton’s side and said nervously, “Hi, Madam Lowe. I’m Ashton’s friend, Sylvia Langley. You can call me Sylvia or even Syl, if you want.”
Irene’s complexion had regained some of its rosiness. She smiled at Sylvia, though she still had a worried look in her eyes.
Ashton had been tending to her health all along, so naturally, she wasn’t suffering from any serious ailment. It was only her heart that was easily affected by stressful situations.
“Ash, you and Roxy…”
Ashton moved closer to Irene’s bed and said lightly, “Mom, nothing good comes by force. Roxy and I have already filed for divorce.”
After everything that had happened, he knew there was no way to hide the situation from Irene, so he told her the truth.
Irene’s breathing started quickening, so he took her calloused hands in his and added, “I’m happier now, Mom. I feel like I’ve regained my freedom! The divorce is a blessing for me, so don’t worry about me.”
After letting out a long sigh, Irene managed to calm down her emotions. “Have you truly let go of her?”
Nodding firmly, Ashton said, “Look at me, Mom. Don’t I look more alive now? I’m like a bird freed from its cage or a fish returning to the sea. This is the best I’ve been in ages! So, Mom, you have to take good care of your health.”
Irene studied Ashton carefully and found that he did look pretty spirited. Forcing a weak smile, she said, “What about Celia?”
“I’ve discussed it with Roxy, Mom. I’ll take Celia home with me a year from now. For the upcoming year, I need to focus on building my career,” Ashton said.

“Really?”
“Of course!”
Glancing between Ashton and Sylvia, Irene shook her head. “I don’t know what’s going on between you young people, but you must promise me one thing, Ash.”
“What is it, Mom?” Ashton asked earnestly.
She stroked his head and advised him, “No matter what happens, Ash, you must look out for yourself. Don’t ever allow yourself to get hurt or mistreated again. I’ll always be proud of you.”
“Mom…”
“Now, now. You’re a fully grown man. Since you’re going to be busy with your career from now on, I’ll head back to Lundberg, our hometown. If you ever feel tired someday, come back and live with me. My pension is enough to keep you fed, too,” Irene said with a laugh.
Ashton lifted his teary eyes. The words were stuck in his throat.
His parents had divorced when he was very little. It hadn’t been easy for Irene to raise him and Madison by herself. Who knew all of the hardships she’d had to endure throughout that period of time?
Yet, as far as he could remember, Irene always had a smile on her face. Even in his earliest memories, she was already a middle–aged woman. She was probably the only person in the world who loved him wholeheartedly and unconditionally.
Many years ago, Ashton had already made his way in the world, but Irene never asked him for money. Whenever she called him, she would tell him to take good care of himself and not to worry about her.
He didn’t try to persuade Irene to stay. The coming year would be turbulent for him, and keeping her in Javonbury would only put her in danger.
“Mom, once you’re back in Lundberg, you must keep taking the herbal remedy I prepared for you. And if anything happens, you must tell me immediately.”
“Yes, my dear son. I will,” Irene said.
She hesitated briefly before muttering, “Ash, I know Roxy has some faults with her temper and all, but she’s not
a bad person. If there’s ever a chance… it’s not a must to get a divorce. Even if it’s just for Celia’s sake…”
“It’s truly over between us, Mom…”
Irene fell silent. She stopped trying to persuade Ashton.
“By the way, Mom, Madison came by to check on you yesterday,” Ashton informed her.
At the mention of Madison, Irene simply nodded in response, her eyes dimming.
Meanwhile, at the police station, Roxy could barely stay on her feet. Her voice trembled as she cried out, “What did you say, Captain Gibson? Celia was kidnapped?”
