Chapter 37

Calvin was afraid Ashton would go berserk and start beating him up as well, so he kept his distance from the latter. That being said, he didn’t hold back on the insults.

“You’re a monster, Ashton! Roxy, you can finally see what kind of man he is, right? He’s just a spineless, irresponsible piece of trash with a violent temper! He’s the one who’s utterly useless, but he takes it out on a woman! People like him are the lowest scum in my book!”

“Watch yourself, Mr. Gray! This is a police station!” Harry rebuked, feeling rather furious himself.

Being a fellow woman, Eunice couldn’t stand it either. She shielded Roxy before glaring at Ashton and snarling in cold fury, “What’s wrong with you? How can you hit someone without even getting your facts straight first?” Ignoring them all, Ashton threatened darkly, “If anything happens to Celia, I’ll make your life a living hell!”

His words seemed to send Roxy into a frenzy. Eyes red, she screamed, “Do you think I want something bad to happen to Celia? Do you know she was calling for you when she was kidnapped? If it weren’t for you, why would Celia have to sneak out of the house to find you?

“Do you think you’re worthy of being a father, Ashton? If you’re so capable, then why don’t you go find Celia and bring her back, huh? What makes you think you have the right to hit me?”

“That’s right! It’s all your fault that Celia was kidnapped!” Calvin agreed.

Ashton’s voice was icy as he retorted, “I didn’t slap you because Celia was kidnapped. It was because you didn’t tell me about it immediately!

“You won’t be able to bear the responsibility if anything has happened to Celia because of the time you wasted! If I’d found out earlier, I might’ve already brought her back.”

“Hah! Aren’t you a bit too full of yourself? Ms. Sloan reported it to the police right away. Besides, we, the Legion, have taken this kidnapping case, and even we can’t promise we’ll be able to bring her back. What gives you the audacity to run your mouth like that, huh?” Eunice snapped.

Her first impression of Ashton was a terrible one. She despised stubborn, obstinate men who pinned all the blame on women the most.

Only Hector was tense and alert after seeing Ashton. He remained on guard, ready to move at a moment’s notice. He was sure Ashton was an expert fighter and not an ordinary man.

“Where’s the footage of the kidnapping?”

“And why should we let you see-”

Eunice was mid–protest when Hector yanked her behind him and said, “Mr. Gray, here’s the footage that shows the moment your daughter, Celia, was taken. Unfortunately, the perpetrator kept his face covered, and the van was unregistered as well.

“We’re unable to track them to see where they went after leaving this street.”

Stunned, Eunice wondered why Hector gave Ashton such a detailed explanation of the situation. It was quite

unlike him.

Without saying anything, Ashton watched the footage three times. His gaze turned colder as he watched the way Celia struggled while crying for him. A surge of darkness seemed to gather in the depths of his eyes.

The room’s temperature dropped.

“Are you certain it’s the work of the Wraiths?” Ashton asked Hector.

“Watch your tone, Mr. Gray!” Harry couldn’t resist reminding Ashton.

The Legion wasn’t part of the regular police force, but their authority far exceeded his own as a police captain.

“It’s fine,” Hector said before nodding to Ashton. “We’ve been investigating these kidnapping cases for some time now, and we’ve planted an undercover operative within the Wraiths. We can be certain this is the work of the Wraiths.”

“What do they usually do with the children once they take them?” Ashton asked.

“Based on prior cases, they ship the children out by sea. Once they’re offshore, it becomes basically impossible to track them. We still don’t know the exact port they use. As you know, Javonbury is a coastal city with a vast shoreline,” Hector informed with a sigh.

“So, for now, we must wait for our undercover operative to report back.”

“What if there’s no news? Are you just going to keep waiting?”

Hector couldn’t answer that question.

“What else can we do? Don’t tell me you have an idea,” Eunice retorted with a snort.

Ashton remained silent for a moment before turning to leave. Just before exiting the room, he said to Roxy and Renee, “Don’t worry. I’m Celia’s father. I won’t let anything happen to her. I’ll bring her back safely.”
