Roxy looked at Ashton and realized that the man she once knew was gone. An unbridgeable chasm now stood between them.

He had never once addressed her with such chilling indifference in the past, but now she saw nothing but disdain and mockery in Ashton’s smile.

She knew Ashton was intent on humiliating her. She found it hard to believe that the man, who had once viewed her as his entire world, was now humiliating her in front of everyone. She simply couldn’t come to terms with this.

“I want you to do just that! I’ll allow Robert to walk out of Blossom Hall in one piece if you beg on his behalf. Otherwise, he’ll spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair! Those are Blossom Hall’s rules, after all!” Ashton stared straight at Roxy, his words cold and deliberate.

He was 20 years old when he first met Roxy and fell head over heels for her. He had sacrificed everything for her, effectively losing ten years of his life in the process. He now intended to reclaim everything he had sacrificed, extracting it from her bit by bit.

“Is this really necessary? Is this how ruthless you have to be, Ashton?” Roxy asked, staring into his dark, fathomless gaze.

Ashton let out a chilling laugh. “You think I’m the ruthless one, huh? Have you already forgotten what you did, Roxy?

“You brought your so–called first love to my house and demanded a divorce during my mother’s birthday celebration! You still did that even though I begged you to wait until that day was over! You nearly caused my mother to lose her life because of that heart attack! How exactly am I the ruthless one here, Roxy?”

Roxy trembled violently under the weight of Ashton’s piercing gaze. She involuntarily took a step back, finding it hard to look into Ashton’s eyes again. She knew she had been at fault after reflecting on the past from her current standpoint, but then she thought that Ashton wasn’t entirely blameless either.

She finally let out a long, shaky breath before stating solemnly, “That’s all in the past, Ashton!”

“It might be over for you, but as far as I’m concerned, this doesn’t end unless your entire family has paid the price, unless Summit Group collapses, and unless I reclaim Celia’s custody!” Ashton declared coldly.

Roxy’s eyes narrowed sharply. “I had no idea you could be so vindictive, Ashton!”

“You can consider yourself informed, then! I have always been a man who settles his scores. I spent ten years devoted to you; now, I will see those years reimbursed through your trembling and your misery, Roxy!” Ashton’s face twisted into a savage grin.

Roxy took another step back and looked toward Damian, who kept his head bowed, too terrified to even look up, let alone stand beside her and face Ashton’s wrath.

Roxy scowled deeply as a bitter realization took hold–one she found nearly impossible to stomach. She was surrounded by a sea of men, but not a single one of them could measure up to Ashton.

She realized, on the other hand, that Ashton was surrounded by truly remarkable women–each more brilliant than the last leaving her feeling overshadowed in a way she never expected.

“I’ll beg you, then–please let go of Robert! Is that what you wanted to hear, Ashton?” Roxy hissed.

She wanted nothing more than to leave the place, but the thought of Robert being permanently crippled left her no choice. She swallowed her pride and endured the crushing weight of shame as she begged him.

“I never thought I’d see the day you actually lowered yourself to beg me, Roxy!” Ashton let out a short, derisive laugh before he waved his hand and ordered, “You can cut him loose now!”

“Got it, Mr. Gray!” Elise chirped, signaling her people to let Robert go with a look of pure satisfaction.

She had achieved exactly what she set out to do. She probably wouldn’t have crippled Robert even if Roxy had stayed silent, as she just needed to force Roxy’s hand. She concluded that this outcome was better than anything she could have planned.

Robert looked like a man who had escaped the gallows once he was released.

He scrambled over to Roxy, but as he passed Damian, he spat at his feet and snarled, “You’re truly pathetic, Mr. Payne! You aren’t even worthy to be in the same room as Ashton! You should stay away from Roxy from now on, as you’re not worthy of her!”

Robert’s view of Ashton had shifted completely after that incident. He no longer looked down on him in any way -only admiration remained.

He kept thinking about how much weight he could throw around if Ashton were still his brother–in–law. He decided right then that he’d find a way to get Ashton and Roxy back together, as he was determined to ride Ashton’s coattails to the top.

Damian’s face went ashen, but he knew this wasn’t the time to pick a fight with Robert. He lowered his head even more, his hatred for Ashton deepening. He vowed that, given the opportunity, he would crush Ashton beneath him and claim every woman around him.

“Roxy…” Robert muttered with his head lowered, not daring to look Roxy in the eye.

“Let’s go!” Roxy commanded. She felt battered and bruised emotionally, but she forced herself to remain composed, as she refused to let Ashton see even a flicker of vulnerability.

She was possessed by a singular need to prove to him that she was the stronger one and that she would thrive without him. She was determined to become stronger, for she would never, under any circumstances, allow him to gain custody of Celia.
