“Huh?” Wanda was a little slow to catch on. “What do you mean?”
“Wanda, don’t tell me you have no idea that the Curios Chamber has set up a betting pool–and the betting odds–for the match between Clay and me?” Ashton said.
“I’m not in charge of that.”
“Well, can’t you take charge of it for a bit, Wanda?”
“What do you have in mind?” Wanda eyed Ashton curiously, having realized she couldn’t quite get a read on him anymore.
“It’s nothing much. I just want to really screw over the Dominion Vanguard this time.”
Ashton laid out his plan to her.
He laid out his plan. “During the match, I’ll deliberately act as though I’m losing to Clay at first. Once the Dominion Vanguard pours in all their money and the live odds peak, all you have to do is help me place a massive bet on me winning.
“This allows me to walk away with a fortune! And when that happens, I’ll definitely make it worth your while, too, Wanda.”
Wanda’s eyes gleamed. She didn’t expect Ashton to come up with an idea like that. It was completely insane!
“Are you so confident you’d be able to defeat Clay?” she asked doubtfully. “As far as I’m aware, he’s no ordinary opponent. The Dominion Vanguard has plenty of divine abilities and secret techniques at its disposal.
“I’m sure they’ll give him some kind of trump card. You shouldn’t be overly optimistic about the fight.”
“I’ve never lost a fight. No one among my peers can defeat me,” Ashton confidently declared.
Wanda pondered for a moment. “I can help you with the arrangements for your plan. I can even leak some information to get the Dominion Vanguard, so that everyone there places even bigger bets. However…”
With a sly smile, she continued, “You have to agree to a condition of mine.”
“What is it?”
“You have to pretend to be my boyfriend until the day the Heavenly Medical Pavilion calls off the engagement. Of course, should your life be in danger, you can confess the truth–that we’re just pretending to be a couple.”
Wanda rubbed her forehead. “I don’t want to marry someone as repulsive as Connor, so I have no choice but to use you as my
cover.”
“That’s fine by me!” Ashton grinned. “But I’d much rather be your real boyfriend, Wanda, not just your fake one.”
Wanda couldn’t bring herself to meet his gaze. Huffing, she said, “Well, that hinges on your upcoming performance, then. Maybe you might have a shot at becoming my official boyfriend.”
“You got it!”
Ashton knew he had to be patient if he wanted to win over Wanda. The prouder the woman, the more thoroughly he had to win her over before she would truly belong to him.
The two discussed some of the finer details of the plan. Once it was settled, he stretched lazily.
Upon recalling something, he asked, “Wanda, does the Curios Chamber have any cultivation manuals suitable for someone with Stellar constitution?”
Wanda gave it some thought before shaking her head. “The stellar arts are exceedingly rare. There aren’t any available over here in Javonbury, but I can help you keep an eye out for them. I’ll let you know if I hear of anything.”

“Thanks, Wanda,” Ashton said before leaning in close once more.
Jumping in alarm, Wanda hurriedly stepped backward, thinking that he was about to take advantage of her again.
Ashton simply looked at the exceptionally charming Wanda with appreciation and made no further move. A woman like her needed to be won over completely.
