Connor scoffed as he cast a disdainful glance at Ashton. “You don’t actually believe Ashton can heal Faye, do you, Mrs. Moore? You’ve called upon one divine doctor after another, and yet nothing worked. You ought to know that Faye’s fate is sealed if even we from the Heavenly Medical Pavilion can’t do it!”
“How could you utter such a thing!” Josie snapped.
She had been biting her tongue from the moment the Heavenly Medical Pavilion arrived, but their sheer condescension was more than she could stomach–their arrogance had become utterly unbearable.
“That’s enough, Josie!” George stepped in to hold her back.
He then turned to Connor with an apologetic look and said, “I don’t think my wife is entirely wrong in this situation, Mr. Connor. How about this?
‘If Dr. Tristan manages to bring Faye back to consciousness, I’ll fulfill your demand and have Ashton escorted out of the premises. If Dr. Tristan’s efforts prove futile, then I’ll let Ashton take a crack at it.”
Connor’s gaze was brimming with killing intent. He couldn’t bear the sight of Ashton for another moment, and he wanted nothing more than to watch Ashton’s reputation crumble and see him driven out in total shame.
“You know this could affect my potential marriage with Faye, so please just let Uncle Tristan perform the treatment first, Connor!” Francis quickly held Connor back and tried to reason with him.
Connor let out a disdainful huff and fell silent, though he still cast a venomous glance toward Ashton and Wanda. He silently vowed to make them pay. He wasn’t going to let Wanda slip through his fingers–he was determined to conquer her no matter
what.
Francis breathed a sigh of relief. He had been captivated by Faye’s beauty since he first saw her, and he was determined to make
her his.
Under the standing arrangement with George, the Heavenly Medical Pavilion’s success in waking Faye and ensuring her full recovery was his ticket to marrying her and becoming the son–in–law of the richest man in Javonbury.
He might actually have a shot at becoming the next head of the Heavenly Medical Pavilion with George’s backing. He wasn’t about to let anyone stand in the way of his ambitions.
“Have you figured out the true cause of Faye’s condition, and is there anything you can do to cure her, Uncle Tristan?” Francis asked, his voice tight with anxiety.
George and Josie both tensed up.
Tristan, the middle–aged man from the Heavenly Medical Pavilion, packed away his silver needles. He furrowed his brow in frustration and, after a great length of time, let out a weary sigh.
“Your daughter’s condition is truly baffling, Mr. and Mrs. Moore–unlike anything I’ve encountered in all my years of practice. “I can only write a prescription that might keep her alive for a few more days. If you really want to heal her and wake her from this state, you’ll have to get the head of the Heavenly Medical Pavilion to step in.‘
“I
Upon hearing that, George and Josie felt a cold dread settle in their chests, their faces turning pale. They knew that the head of the Heavenly Medical Pavilion had been in seclusion for many years and had stopped seeing patients long ago.
They knew that getting him to come out of seclusion to treat Faye was going to be next to impossible.
“Is there really no other way, Uncle Tristan?” Francis‘ countenance paled. He had summoned Tristan personally because the man was supposed to be a legend–one of the best doctors the Heavenly Medical Pavilion had to offer.
He had figured that once Tristan stepped in, Faye’s recovery was a foregone conclusion and that his marriage would follow shortly after. That sudden failure was a devastating blow to his plans.
