“No, that’s not happening!” Calvin quickly interjected. “Isaac Carter is one of Ashton’s men. Are you expecting Roxy to beg Ashton for help?

“These are just a bunch of criminal bosses. I’ll talk to them! Emerson Group isn’t some pushover in Javonbury either. I’m sure they’ll show me some courtesy.”

“I’ll have to trouble you with this then, Calvin,” Roxy said.

“It’s no problem at all. Leave it to me!” Calvin declared with a thump of his puffed–out chest. “Ashton’s gone, but I’m here!”

Full of confidence, he strode down to the first–floor lobby of Summit Lounge. But the second he saw the 100 or so men from the Darkfang Gang, the Crimsons, and the Triune gathered together, he cowered. Sweat broke out on his forehead.

“Mr. Emerson, that’s Arlo Ortega of the Darkfang Gang, Nathan Cohen of the Crimsons, and Oscar Hoffman of the Triune. They’re all notorious criminal bosses in this area,” Anna informed Calvin in a low voice.

“They never caused trouble for us in the past when we had Mr. Carter holding the line for us. I’m guessing they heard about Mr. Carter’s resignation and have come to demand a protection fee from us.”

Steeling himself, Calvin put on a brave front and approached the three men. Smiling, he said, “Greetings, gentlemen. My name is Calvin Emerson. My family owns Emerson Group, and Frank Emerson is my father.

“I hope the three of you will avoid disrupting Summit Lounge’s business as a favor to me. Why don’t we take a seat somewhere and have a chat? What do you say?”

In Calvin’s mind, these petty street thugs had no reason not to show him some courtesy, especially after he’d just dropped Frank’s name. And if he could smooth this over for Roxy, she’d finally see Ashton for what he really was and cut him off completely.

Then, he could swoop in and take her for himself.

He was dying to get a taste of Roxy in bed. If not for that, he would never have bothered getting involved in this

mess.

Arlo, Nathan, and Oscar all eyed Calvin piercingly, sizing him up. With just a single look, they could tell he was all talk and no substance–acting tough on the outside but weak on the inside.

The men scoffed derisively in unison before looking away.

“As a favor to you, huh? Who the hell are you? Are you able to speak on Ms. Sloan’s behalf?” Arlo questioned icily.

The rules of the criminal underworld were simple–might was right!

Ashton had previously proven how much stronger he was, so they’d accepted that outcome and dared not set foot into Summit Lounge.

But now that he was no longer protecting the place, they didn’t think much of Summit Lounge at all.

“Ms. Sloan is my girlfriend–my fiancee! Of course I can speak on her behalf,” Calvin proudly declared.

“You?”

After studying Calvin carefully, Arlo couldn’t resist bursting into laughter. “Did Ms. Sloan actually choose a wimp like you? I guess she’s got bad taste.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Calvin snarled, his face darkening with fury.

“Nothing. Since you can speak on Ms. Sloan’s behalf, we won’t waste any more time. From now on, our men will be frequenting Summit Lounge daily to enjoy the services provided here. As they say, customers are always welcome, yeah? I’m sure Ms. Sloan won’t kick us out, right

“But of course, if you don’t want us around, we can work something out. Ms. Sloan simply needs to give each one of us five million dollars a month. As long as we get the cash, we promise we won’t cause any disruptions for her business!” Arlo declared arrogantly,

Five million dollars apiece equaled 15 million dollars for the three of them combined, but Summit Lounge only made 20 million dollars in profits at most a month!

Agreeing to such terms would mean that all of the month’s work would be for nothing

“You’re asking for too much! Don’t forget that we’re living in a lawful society. If I call the police, you people will be the ones suffering the consequences of biting off more than you can chew once the officers show up!” Calvin threatened heatedly.

“I’m just being nice by discussing this matter with you. Do you actually think you guys are a bunch of big shots?” Anna went pale with fright. What kind of fool did Roxy get involved with? Calvin was about to ruin everything! In a flash, Arlo lunged at Calvin and grabbed him by the throat. “Did you just say you’ll make us suffer the consequences for biting off more than we can chew? You’ve got a death wish, punk?”

“L–Let go of me at once! No, my apologies, Mr. Ortega. I was wrong. Please release me!” Calvin whimpered. He chickened out the moment he felt Arlo’s murderous intent. He had no idea these men would play rough like that!

“Hurry up and save me, Roxy!” Calvin squealed out of genuine terror.

Upon seeing the quivering Calvin, Roxy had a look of disappointment. She had no choice but to step forward.

“Please forgive Calvin for his ignorance, Mr. Ortega,” she said. “If there’s something you’d like to discuss, we can sit down and talk about it.”
