“Seriously, Mrs. Salisbury didn’t even bother to show up tonight. Instead, Jace waltzes in with his gorgeous secretary on his arm. The Salisburys are really making it obvious how little they care about the Morgan family.”
“But the Morgans are here too, aren’t they?”
A little ways off, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan were still forcing smiles that looked ready to crack. Their eyes, though, were cold enough to freeze water. Standing with them was Madison, the daughter they’d lost for twenty-two years and only recently found.
Cole Morgan turned away, muttering under her breath, “Pathetic. We went through all the trouble to marry Wiona into the Salisbury family, and she can’t even get her husband to care about her. He’s here with a secretary, not Wiona. Is Wiona trying to embarrass us in front of everyone?”
Jasmine Morgan looked just as disappointed. “What’s gotten into Wiona these days? The Salisburys don’t even pretend to care about appearances anymore.
“We shouldn’t have come. This whole thing is humiliating.”
Madison crossed her arms, her voice flat and cool. “Weren’t we the ones who abandoned Wiona first?
“No one ever cared about her. The Salisburys are just doing what’s best for themselves.”
Cole and Jasmine were completely thrown by Madison’s words. They stared at her, stunned, but Madison just picked up a glass of champagne and wandered off like she didn’t have a care in the world.
Still, Jace bringing a secretary instead of his wife didn’t cause as much of a scene as people might have expected. Even the Morgans could swallow their pride, and everyone else was just enjoying the gossip.
Across the room, Bianca shot Kellen a jealous glare. “After tonight, everyone’s going to know who that bitch is.
“Mom, how could you let my brother bring her to something this important?
“Didn’t you hate her before? She took the five million and left Stonehill, but she still came crawling back. She’s so greedy.
She made a chopping motion with her hand.
Alona’s lips curled into a perfect, practiced smile. “All I need to do is give things a little nudge. I don’t have to do anything myself.
“Pretty soon, the spot for Jace’s wife will be wide open. Then I can find a real heiress for your brother, someone who actually deserves him.
“She’ll have a better family, better looks, better education, and more talent than Wiona ever could.
“And as for Kellen, I got rid of her once. I can do it again. Women like her are the least of my problems.”
Alona looked completely confident, almost excited. Bianca, though, couldn’t help but say, “Mom, finding someone better than Wiona… that won’t be easy.”
