Alona shot her a look. “What do you know?”
“I’m telling you, stay away from your brother tonight. Don’t mess things up, got it?”
She lowered her voice, her tone laced with venom. “I’ll have someone take more photos of Jace and Kellen getting cozy, then send them straight to Wiona. I heard her pregnancy isn’t going well and she’s in the hospital. If she gets so upset that she loses the baby, well, that would solve all my problems.”
Alona and her daughter slipped back into the party, mingling and smiling at everyone around them. They were too busy playing their social games to notice the shadowy figure that darted past behind them.
The ball was just beginning.
Jace was in the center of the dance floor, holding Kellen close as they swayed to the first song of the night. Under the gaze of everyone there, he stared at her with a gentle, almost adoring expression. Their eyes met, and for a moment, it seemed like no one else existed.
Their chemistry was impossible to ignore. Even the guests watching from the sidelines were whispering.
“Mr. Salisbury really knows how to turn on the charm.”
“Those two… there’s no way it’s innocent. Who even remembers the real Mrs. Salisbury tonight?”
“Look at them. Honestly, they make a perfect couple.”
Suddenly, a scream echoed from the garden.
“It’s Mrs. Salisbury!”
“There’s blood… so much blood.”
“Mrs. Salisbury is hurt…”
“And Mr. Salisbury is still inside, dancing with his secretary.”
Jace overheard bits and pieces. His heart thudded hard in his chest.
“What happened?” He stopped, turning to a servant nearby.
Before he could get an answer, someone burst in, breathless and terrified. “Sir, it’s bad. Mrs. Salisbury… she’s hurt, there’s blood everywhere…”
He finally managed, “Are you hurt?”
She had a fresh bandage on her forehead, but Jace’s eyes kept flicking to her stomach. He was more worried about the baby—his and Kellen’s child.
This wasn’t the place to ask.
Without thinking, Jace scooped Wiona into his arms. She felt shockingly light.
Wiona, maybe sensing his fear, placed her hand over her belly for everyone to see. “Really, Jace, I’m fine. It’s just a scratch. The baby’s okay.”
A hush fell over the crowd. Sympathy swept through everyone watching.
No one had realized how much Wiona cared for Jace. Even hurt as she was, she still tried to comfort him.
And she was pregnant. How could the Salisbury family let her wander around on her own?
To make it worse, tonight Mr. Salisbury had been parading his secretary around at their biggest event, while his pregnant wife almost lost her life.
