For the first time, Wiona started to understand why he had been so desperate to find her and keep her at Hawthorne Hall.
“Alice, let’s listen to the doctors from now on, okay? If you do, you won’t fall anymore. And you’ll understand why you can’t scoop the moon out of the water. You’ll be a smart, good girl.”
Alice clung to Wiona, her little arms wrapped tight around Wiona’s waist. “I’ll listen to you, Wiona. I want to be a good girl.”
Donna wiped at her red, watery eyes. Suddenly, she caught sight of the curve of Wiona’s belly beneath her nightgown and froze. It was autumn, so Wiona usually wore loose clothes that hid her figure. But now, with only a thin layer of fabric and Alice holding on to her, her bump was obvious.
Is Ms. Morgan pregnant? Donna stared, her mind racing with a thousand questions she didn’t dare ask.
When Alice finally fell asleep, Wiona went back to her own room. But sleep wouldn’t come. The whole night had been strange and unreal. Every time she closed her eyes, she could still feel his breath against her neck, see those dark, almost crimson eyes that seemed to swallow her whole.
Wiona got up and took another shower, hoping the cold water would help her calm down. She pressed her hands over her face, not even sure how she was supposed to face Conrad tomorrow. All she could hope for was that when he woke up, he’d just act like nothing had happened at all. If not, she honestly wasn’t sure she could stay here.
When she finally opened her eyes again, sunlight was streaming through the window. Wiona sat up slowly, thinking, It’s so late already. Conrad must have gone to the office by now.
But when she went downstairs, she saw him sitting at the table, still in casual clothes, scrolling through news on his tablet. He hadn’t gone to work.
Wiona almost turned around and walked right back upstairs.
“Ms. Morgan.” His voice was calm. “I was waiting for you.”
She had no choice but to keep going. Forcing herself to sound normal, she asked, “Are you… feeling better?”
Conrad didn’t look up. He just made a quiet sound of agreement.
Libby, standing nearby, couldn’t help but notice how the tips of Conrad’s ears and his neck were turning red. Libby raised an eyebrow, starting to believe what Jason had said last night. Something definitely happened between these two.
But that wasn’t necessarily a good thing. Last night, Donna had said Ms. Morgan looked pregnant. Everyone at Hawthorne Hall liked Ms. Morgan, but nobody forgot that she was not just W, she was also Mrs. Salisbury. With her background, if anything happened between her and Conrad, it could spell real trouble for the Sullivans.
Wiona snapped out of her own thoughts, her eyes wide. “You noticed it, too?”
The way she said “too” made Conrad’s lips twitch in the hint of a smile. “Why don’t you go first, Ms. Morgan. Tell me what you’ve found.”
Wiona’s whole expression changed. “In his note, he never revealed that I’m W. He didn’t mention how you set him up at the hospital. He left out that Grandma Grace was the real mentormind. Instead, he blamed my mentor, who was actually innocent. It’s like he was protecting someone or hiding something. And honestly, just losing his reputation and being expelled doesn’t seem enough to make him kill himself. There’s something missing.”
“Sharp analysis,” Conrad said. “Taylor never struck me as someone who’d just give up. So, you have a theory?”
Her voice was quiet but serious. “I think someone threatened him. Maybe… maybe this wasn’t even a suicide.” The thought made her shiver. In twenty-three years, she’d never seen anything like this. It was hard to wrap her mind around it happening right here, to people she knew.
“Could it be the Salisbury family?” It was the only explanation she could come up with. Only Grandma Grace would be afraid of Taylor exposing her. But she quickly shook her head. “She’s still in the hospital. She wouldn’t have had the chance. The rest of the family is too busy to know what’s really going on. So who could it be?”
Conrad was about to answer when Libby came in, looking anxious. He leaned in toward Conrad and spoke quietly. “Sir, your mother is back. And she seems very upset.”
