“Wiona, what are we going to do?”
“If Dad dies… I won’t have anyone left in the world.”
Wiona felt her heart drop.
Adler was no saint. When he was younger, he was violent, always taking out his anger on his family. Molly’s mom couldn’t take it anymore. One morning, she just left, leaving Molly behind, and never looked back. From then on, it was just Molly and Adler.
But Adler still didn’t appreciate her. He’d hit Molly, too. He even believed Alona’s lies. When Molly got into Stonehill College, Adler didn’t want to let her keep studying. He almost married her off to some guy Alona picked, just for the money. If Wiona hadn’t stepped in, Molly’s whole life would have gone down the drain.
Molly hated her father.
But she couldn’t just watch him die.
They were each other’s only family left. Molly could live with Adler going to jail, but not with him dying like this.
Molly’s crying made Wiona’s heart ache even more.
Were they too late?
They reached the hospital. The ER staff was already waiting outside. As soon as they got there, Adler was rushed inside.
Molly’s eyes were red. She kept wiping away her tears and started to pray, her voice trembling.
Wiona went straight to the doctor’s office and found the attending physician.
“Please, do everything you can to save the man who just came in. We’ll cover any cost, no matter what.”
She bowed deeply. “I’m begging you.”
The doctor looked startled, and when he saw who was with her, he shot up from his chair.
“You’re too kind, miss. Saving lives… that’s our job. We’ll do everything we can.”
A call came from the ER, urgent.
“The patient’s crashing.”
“Severe head trauma.”
“Multiple fractures, everything’s a mess.”
“Blood pressure keeps dropping…”
“It’s not looking good. There’s not much more we can do.”
The doctor’s face turned white. He rushed out.
Hearing all this, Wiona felt panic rising inside her. She started to run after him.
Conrad caught her arm.
“Take it easy.”
He glanced at her stomach.
Suddenly, Conrad reached over and pushed her baseball cap down a little, like he was trying to shield her.
“Gods?” he said quietly.
“There aren’t any gods. But people can make things happen.”
“Maybe it’s not as hopeless as it feels.”
“Let’s wait for news.”
He flicked the brim of her cap and walked away without another word.
Korey, who’d been standing nearby, gave Wiona a complicated look, then hurried after Conrad, his mind racing.
First, was Mr. Sullivan really about to step in and save this man himself? What had this driver done to deserve that? There were people all over the world who would give anything for C to help, but it had never happened. And now Mr. Sullivan was just going to do it for Ms. Morgan?
Second, Ms. Morgan wanted a divorce.
Korey remembered something. The abortion Mr. Sullivan had scheduled was suddenly canceled. Not only had it been postponed, he hadn’t asked Korey to find the surrogate again. Only Mr. Sullivan knew who the surrogate was.
And Ms. Morgan was on that list.
Mr. Sullivan treated her differently from everyone else.
That time Mr. Sullivan was drugged, Ms. Clements basically threw herself at him, but he refused. He’d rather suffer through the pain and rush back to Hawthorne Hall.
Sure, there were doctors there who could help him, but was the real reason because Ms. Morgan was there, too?
