Kellen’s face had gone completely pale.
It finally hit her, showing up tonight had made her look like an absolute fool.
Tears gathered in her eyes as she looked up at Jace, too scared to say a single wrong word.
“I… I didn’t… I don’t know…”
She looked so helpless that Jace felt a sharp pain in his chest.
He couldn’t stand to see her like this.
His voice was tight and urgent. “Grandma, why are you putting her through this?
“She’s just my secretary.
“Do you really have to embarrass your only grandson in front of everyone here?”
Grandma Grace’s words had just made it clear to the whole Salisbury family that Jace wasn’t loyal, that he was messing around outside his marriage.
But what mattered even more was that Kellen didn’t deserve to be hurt by anyone in the Salisbury family.
Not even by his grandmother.
Jace’s harsh tone clearly annoyed Daniel.
“Jace, is that any way to talk to your grandmother?
“Step back!”
Daniel might not have cared much about his son’s private life, but he was a good son himself. He couldn’t let his son disrespect his own mother like that.
Grandma Grace ignored Jace completely. She just smiled and waved Wiona over.
Taking Wiona’s hand, Grandma Grace was all warmth and kindness. “My dear, where’s that surprise you promised me? Aren’t you going to show me?
“I’ve been looking forward to it for days.
“Even if you just bought me a ten-dollar mug, I’d love it.
“Because it’s from you, I’d treasure it forever.
“On the other hand, some people could bring me the fanciest gifts and I wouldn’t even care.
“You’re the one I care about, the only person I recognize as the future lady of the Salisbury family.”
She ran her fingers over the family heirloom on Wiona’s wrist, then gently touched her belly.
“You’ve done the family proud.
“Dr. Monroe told me you’re carrying twins. Were you planning to surprise me with this news on my birthday?
“Wiona, I know you’ve had your share of unfair treatment.
“As long as I’m here, I’ll always be on your side.”
Wiona’s eyes went red.
She knelt down a little, looking up at Grandma Grace with quiet obedience. “Grandma, I’m really fine. You don’t have to worry about me all the time.”
She knew the old lady had gone out of her way to embarrass Kellen for her sake tonight, and even Wiona’s guarded heart softened a little.
In the whole Salisbury family, Grandma Grace was the only one who showed her any real kindness.
And tonight, she had truly stood up for her.
Wiona understood that Grandma Grace wanted to give her more respect, maybe even save her marriage to Jace.
Wiona knew she’d never go back to him, but she also didn’t want to upset Grandma Grace while she was still alive.
As for the divorce…it could wait a few more months. She could use the time to get back at Jace and Kellen.
And that old bitch.
Why was she still alive?
How dare she humiliate her like this tonight?
She wanted to support Wiona?
Just wait. Kellen would love to see the look on her face when she learned the truth, when she realized Wiona was nothing but a lowly stand-in.
Kellen was the real mother of the Salisbury heirs.
Suddenly, Wiona spoke up. “Grandma, can we open my gift a little later?
“There’s something I need to ask Kellen first.”
Wiona stood up slowly.
She turned and walked toward Kellen, her voice calm but firm. “I’m curious. Where did you get this tea set?
“It’s funny, because I have one just like it. Cassian gave it to me himself.
“There’s only one, handcrafted by him, with a design that doesn’t exist anywhere else.
“But two months ago, mine disappeared from my home.
“Do you know what happened to it,?”
Kellen’s panic was immediate. She stumbled back, realizing what she’d done. “Mr. Salisbury…I didn’t know…”
Jace was caught off guard by Wiona’s sudden move.
“Wiona, what are you talking about?”
His eyes were cold, a clear warning. “Ms. Castro is not just my secretary. Tonight she’s a guest of the Salisbury family.”
