Here it comes. The moment of truth. Wiona couldn’t help feeling nervous and a little guilty, her hands curling into tight fists on her knees. But Conrad didn’t say a word. He just unbuckled her seatbelt and gently took off the helmet he’d put on her earlier. Then, still silent, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her off the helicopter.
Phil, the new butler, hurried forward. “Sir, welcome back.”
Conrad got straight to business. “Have Jason and his team give Ms. Morgan a full check-up. Prepare dinner for her, and make sure there’s a hot bath ready. And for now, don’t let Alice know Ms. Morgan is back.”
“Yes, sir,” Phil replied.
The check-up didn’t take long. Jason packed up his things, looking relaxed. “Sir, Ms. Morgan, you can both relax. The babies are doing well. Everything looks normal. Ms. Morgan is just tired. She needs to rest as much as possible. We’ve treated the wound on her hand, so try not to get it wet for a few days, but otherwise, there’s nothing to worry about.”
Jason and his team left quietly.
Conrad stood there, still holding Wiona, just staring at her. She braced herself, thinking he was finally going to ask her all those questions. Instead, he turned to Shelly, the maid waiting nearby. “Take good care of her.”
Shelly nodded right away. “Of course, sir. I’ll look after Ms. Morgan and make sure she’s comfortable.”
And with that, Conrad left.
All the things Wiona wanted to say were stuck in her throat. She felt frustrated, both unable to get the words out and unable to let them go. Whatever. After the chaos of the past two days, she was far too exhausted to argue. If he wasn’t ready to talk tonight, she’d just enjoy the quiet and get some rest while she could.
She managed to get some food, then drifted off while soaking in the bath. Shelly washed her hair and helped her clean up, then gently woke her. “Ms. Morgan, maybe try sleeping in bed? You’ll catch a chill if you stay in the tub.”
Wiona scrambled out, collapsed onto the bed, and fell asleep in less than five minutes.
Before she dozed off, she rested her hand on her belly. She had no idea what tomorrow would bring. Since she’d been caught and brought back, there was no choice but to face it head on. She’d stand her ground. She had to keep her babies, no matter what.
She slept straight through to morning. Maybe it was the calming tea she’d had before bed, but even after everything that had happened, she didn’t have a single nightmare.
As soon as she opened her eyes, Shelly appeared with a gentle smile. “Good morning, Ms. Morgan. Sir is waiting in the dining room. Would you like to go down for breakfast?”
Wiona had tried to escape. She’d failed. Not only that, she’d almost lost her life in the Salisbury family’s kidnapping mess. Since there was no running anymore, she might as well face it all now.
She didn’t think she could eat a bite, but just then her stomach rumbled loudly. Wiona blushed. Okay, maybe she was hungrier than she thought.
She ended up eating a lot. These days, her appetite was huge. As her belly grew, she started feeling like a bottomless pit. She was eating twice as much as before, though thankfully she hadn’t started gaining much weight yet.
Still, with everything hanging over her head, she finished quickly, ready to get the real conversation started.
Conrad wiped his hands slowly, then stood. “Come with me.”
He led her into a cozy sitting room. By the window, sunlight poured over a small round table with a steaming pot of fruit tea. Conrad took a seat and gestured for her to sit across from him.
Wiona sat up stiff and straight. Conrad noticed and signaled to a maid, who swapped out the cushion behind her for a bigger, softer one. Instinctively, Wiona leaned back, feeling a little more comfortable.
Finally, Conrad spoke. “Ms. Morgan, when did I ever say I was going to make you get an abortion?”
