“I wouldn’t dare,” Wiona replied quietly. “I just don’t want my kids to grow up with people whispering about their background. I don’t want the world judging them.”
“With me around, who would do that to them?” Conrad said, his voice steady. “I can tell, Ms. Morgan, you really love them.”
Wiona rested her hand over her belly. “They’re my only real family in this world. Just the three of us. I’d give anything for them.”
Conrad’s lips curled into a soft smile. “I believe you’ll make a great mom.”
He looked like he wanted to add something, but his phone rang. He picked up, and Korey’s voice came through. “Mr. Sullivan, Ecstasy has been shut down.”
Conrad glanced at Wiona and pressed the speaker button. She could hear every word.
“But Sam’s vanished. Alona and Bianca are missing too. Either they ran with him or they’re hiding somewhere. We’ve already cleared out the rest of the people at Ecstasy. Sam is furious. He’s threatening to come after us.”
“Okay,” Conrad said. “I’ll head over now. Keep searching for Sam, bring in more people, and work with the police. Do everything you can to find him.”
“Yes, sir.”
Once the call ended, Conrad turned back to Wiona. “If you need to go out, make sure Tim and Jim go with you. You heard what Korey said. Sam left last night with your ex-mother-in-law. He’s unstable, completely unpredictable, and until he’s behind bars, he’s a danger to everyone. So unless it’s really necessary, I think you should stay at Hawthorne Hall for now.”
He checked his watch. Clearly, he was in a hurry, and he started to wrap things up. “We’ll talk about the kids in a month. And Ms. Morgan, don’t forget what I said. Don’t even think about running away again. I won’t be so forgiving next time.”
This time, he let it go, mostly because he could see how shaken she was. Conrad held himself back, resisting the urge to reach out and touch her hair. After a quick goodbye, he left in a rush.
Wiona hadn’t expected things to end like that. Their conversation felt cut off, unfinished, with so much left unsaid. It left her feeling stuck, unsettled.
After everything with the Morgan family came out, and everyone else started giving her the cold shoulder, Grandma Grace was the only one who stayed by her side, always favoring her a little, even over Jace. But once Wiona realized Grandma Grace was the one who’d manipulated her life the most, she cut off all her feelings for her. Even now, after surviving everything together the night before, Wiona had no desire to forgive and move on. She couldn’t just pretend nothing had happened. She didn’t want to see her again. It was better this way.
When someone died, maybe it was easier to let things go. But Wiona was still alive, and she couldn’t just forgive and forget.
That evening, her phone buzzed with a message from Dr. Monroe. “Wiona, Grandma Grace said if you want the divorce papers, you’ll need to come to the hospital.”
Wiona squeezed her phone tight as she read the text, then finally got up and grabbed her coat. She found Phil, the new butler. “Could you have a car ready? I need to go to the hospital. And if possible, please let Tim and Jim know I’ll need them to come with me.”
“Of course, Ms. Morgan. I’ll take care of it right away.” Phil bowed politely.
Wiona waited outside the manor. She noticed a few maids whispering together at a distance, but when she looked over, they scattered immediately.
