John just laughed when he heard her. “Aren’t you always loaded? Drop the act. You think I don’t know you’re sleeping with the Salisbury Corporation CEO? Let’s be real, you’re just the side piece. You’ve got enough stashed away for our whole family to live like royalty, but have you ever cared about me? You little bitch. Not only did you ignore me, you’ve been hiding out. I should beat some sense into you right now.”
His hand was raised again, but Kellen quickly pleaded, her voice trembling. “Please, Dad, I’m telling the truth. I’m not lying to you. And I’m not some mistress or whatever people say. I’m Jace’s true love. You don’t know what’s really going on, you’re just listening to gossip. Why would I lie to my own dad? I stayed away to keep Jace from thinking less of me. I didn’t want him to know I came from a family he’d look down on. But once I make my place in the Salisbury family, do you really think I wouldn’t care about you? You have no idea, Dad. I’m pregnant. The baby is Jace’s, and he already divorced Wiona.”
Kellen’s eyes lit up as she spoke, her words tumbling out. “If I marry Jace and have this baby, we’ll have more money than we could ever spend. I’ll give you whatever you want, just don’t make things harder for me. Please, don’t hit me again. If something happens to me, I lose everything. I can’t let that happen. This baby is my chance, Dad. It’s like fate.”
All she wanted was to marry into the Salisbury family, to finally leave her old life behind and never be looked down on again.
John eyed her belly, suspicious. “You? Pregnant? For real?”
Kellen nodded, pleading with her eyes. “Why would I make that up? I haven’t been able to help you yet because I’m still working my way up. But our time is finally here.”
John seemed to buy it, at least a little. Still, he sounded doubtful. “You really think you can become Mrs. Salisbury?”
She straightened, showing off a babies bump that wasn’t there. “I know I can. Jace always wanted a kid with me. Now I’m actually having his baby. He’s going to be obsessed with me.”
“Dad, I really don’t have that kind of money right now.”
John’s eyes narrowed. She’d just been bragging about her life, and now she was making excuses. “You don’t have it? You are saying you don’t have five million? Kellen, if you don’t give me that money, I’ll go to the media and tell everyone about your father and your brother. You want that fancy life, don’t you? I know you’re ashamed of us. If you don’t hand over the money, I’ll ruin your little dream. None of us will get what we want. I’m giving you three days. If you don’t come up with the five million, I’ll show up at the Salisbury Corporation with signs, let everyone know what sort of man their future CEO’s father-in-law really is.”
He let out a loud snort, fists clenched, and stormed off.
Kellen slumped against the wall, pale and shaking. She just didn’t understand. Why did her own father have to do this to her?
