Mason said, “Adler’s alright. Looks like Mr. Salisbury decided not to make a big deal out of it since the Salisbury Corporation is still under the spotlight. He just sent Adler back to the sanatorium. Molly has already taken her dad home. She’s taken time off from school, so she probably won’t be back for a while.”
Wiona finally felt her heart settle a little. Adler was safe, and that was all that mattered for now. After hanging up, she didn’t stay outside any longer. She and Peter got in the car the Sullivan family sent and headed back to Hawthorne Hall.
Wiona kept busy in the car. First, she called Summer to update her. “Summer, I have an idea, but I’m not sure how you’ll feel about it.”
Summer was already touched by everything Wiona had done for her father. When she heard there was a plan, she answered right away, “Tell me.”
Wiona lowered her voice. “I think… we should let people think your dad is in a vegetative state.”
Summer was stunned. “Wait, what did you say?”
Wiona glanced at the driver, then asked him to raise the partition before she continued.
Meanwhile, Peter used the quiet moment to check in with Conrad. “Mr. Sullivan, it seems Ms. Morgan has quite a few issues following her around.”
Conrad replied, “She hasn’t asked for help. That means she can handle it herself. Don’t interfere.”
Peter thought, So Mr. Sullivan already knew. Ms. Morgan really is full of surprises. At first, he thought her biggest claim to fame was being a brilliant artist. Now he realized she was calm, sharp, and handled problems with a quiet confidence. No wonder Mr. Sullivan was so invested in her, but still trusted her to deal with things her own way. And, from the looks of it, she and… well, she and *her* seemed to get along pretty well too.
Wiona suddenly felt awkward about her place in all this and took her time getting ready, only changing after Shelly came to hurry her along. The dress Conrad sent was a pearl white evening gown, not too tight, not too loose. The fabric was light as air and shimmered softly, like liquid moonlight, absolutely stunning.
Standing in front of the mirror, Wiona stared at herself. Ever since her belly started to show, she kept wearing looser clothes. She hadn’t expected to look this good in a dress again. She turned a little, noticing the gentle curve of her baby bump. Even so, the gown still flattered her shape, showing off her waist and the delicate lines of her collarbones. Two long panels flowed down her back, blending perfectly with the fishtail skirt. Her skin was soft and flawless, except for a small red birthmark on her shoulder.
Wiona took a few steps, and Shelly gasped. “Ms. Morgan, you look incredible.”
Under Shelly’s watchful eye, Wiona put on her makeup, adding a bit of highlighter to her collarbones for an extra glow. Shelly then styled her long, wavy hair until it cascaded perfectly down her back. She helped Wiona put on pearl earrings, a matching necklace, and a bracelet, all set with pearls and gemstones.
Each piece of jewelry had also been sent by Conrad that day. Wiona was amazed by every piece. As someone who knew the industry, she could tell they were priceless. She recognized them right away as treasures from medieval royalty, the kind that had sold for huge sums at auction years ago.
