Nikolai and Drake had heard enough. They were done sitting back. In a flash, they jumped up and started kicking Jace. “God, I’ve been wanting to do this forever. You really are something else. I’ve never met anyone as shameless as you!”
“If I were Ms. Morgan, I’d have stabbed you a hundred times by now. How could you still think you get a say in her life?”
“Who she marries has nothing to do with you!”
“Seriously, Ms. Morgan must have stepped on every crack in the universe to end up with a jerk like you. You’re disgusting.”
They made sure not to go too far, never really meaning to put Jace in the hospital. But when he was left coughing up blood and couldn’t say a word, they finally stopped, breathing hard as they crouched next to him.
Nikolai gave Jace’s cheek a light slap, his tone icy. “Mr. Salisbury, what’s gone is gone.”
“Thank God that babies aren’t yours.”
“Face the facts.”
“If you try anything again, next time we’ll make sure you can’t walk. Ever.”
With that, they stood up and stepped aside.
Wiona glanced back at Jace, lying there battered and broken. She didn’t feel a thing. Not anger, not pity, not even satisfaction.
Jace, everything that happened to you today is exactly what you deserve.
“Let’s go.”
She reached for Conrad’s hand, and together they walked into the city hall.
Jace tried to push himself up, but every time he struggled, he just collapsed again, coughing up even more blood.
He got it now. It was too late. He was about to lose Wiona, for good, with no way to turn things around.
The moment he realized she’d always known the truth, it all hit him. No wonder she hated him so much.
He just hadn’t wanted to admit it.
Now, he saw it all for what it was.
His heart felt empty. Hollow. Like nothing was left.
“It’s all my fault…”
“I set you up.”
“I made you carry someone else’s child.”
“I turned you into a surrogate, just for Kellen.”
“I really am unforgivable.”
“You knew everything from the start. That’s why you hate me…”
“I’m a monster…”
“I’m the one who let you slip away. I ruined everything with my own hands.”
“Wiona, I get it now. I really do. I was wrong. So wrong…”
He let out a broken laugh, the sound echoing off the stone steps.
Jace used the railing to drag himself upright, stumbling toward the street in a daze.
His car was still parked at the curb, right where he left it two days ago.
For two days straight, he’d played out every scenario in his head. If only he could do it all again. If there really was such a thing as a second chance, how different would things be?
Wiona barely had time to process what was happening. They were whisked past everyone else, and the staff took her documents with a practiced hand.
It was almost funny to think how nervous she was now. The first time she got married, to Jace, she hadn’t felt like this at all.
Why was her heart racing so much today?
They sat together on the sofa, both of them sitting up straight, nerves and excitement bouncing between them. All they had to do was wait for the paperwork, sign, and it would all be official.
The staff was quick and efficient, bringing over the documents in no time.
“Mr. Sullivan, given your status and assets, we just need to confirm again that this marriage agreement was signed voluntarily and by your own hand. Is that correct?”
Wiona remembered the agreement. Conrad had written that he’d share everything with her.
She finally snapped out of her daze. “Wait!”
“Conrad, you really don’t have to follow the marriage agreement.”
She understood how much this meant for a company as huge as his. Whether or not he shared his personal assets with her didn’t matter. As long as he left something for their child one day, that was enough for her.
Conrad looked at her, serious. “Wiona, this is important to me. I mean it.”
“This isn’t some joke.”
He shot an annoyed glance at the staff member. “My lawyer already sorted this out. Is there really anything left to say?”
The meaning was clear. The staff member was just going through the motions.
He glanced at Wiona, a little awestruck.
“Yes, of course,” he said, nodding quickly.
