“How did things end up like this? Dad doesn’t remember anything. He can’t recall how he fell, what happened before, or even how he managed to come back to Stonehill with me. But then why did he suddenly go to Azure Court and say all that to you?How could it get this bad? If I’d known, I would have asked him for the truth last night, no matter what. I waited so long for Dad to wake up, and now he has Alzheimer’s? He’s still so young. How could this happen to him? He seemed completely fine when he woke up last night. How could everything change so fast…”
Summer just couldn’t take it. Her emotions kept crashing over her, one wave after another.
Wiona tried to soothe her. “Summer, maybe things aren’t as hopeless as they seem. Let’s wait a little longer. In a couple of days, we might get a different answer.”
Summer stared at her, lost and helpless.
Wiona nodded encouragingly, her tone gentle but sure. “Trust me. It’s not as bad as you think.”
Two days later, Wiona and Summer were back in the doctor’s office.
The doctor handed them a pile of reports. “We’ve determined that Cassian isn’t suffering from Alzheimer’s. He’s been poisoned.”
Summer shot up from her chair. “Poisoned? But my dad’s been in the hospital the whole time. How could he be poisoned? Are you absolutely sure?”
The doctor nodded. “We ran several tests overnight just to be certain. The poison caused memory problems and confusion. The symptoms look a lot like Alzheimer’s, but there are some differences. That’s why it’s so easy to misdiagnose, and the real cause gets overlooked.”
Wiona stayed calm. She pulled a few plastic-wrapped dried flowers out of her bag and handed them to the doctor. “Could you test these for anything unusual?”
