The guest room sat quietly in the southwest corner of the third floor.
From the bed, Devin heard the noise drifting up from the garden. He opened his eyes, lashes trembling like the wings of a moth. For just a moment, it felt as if the stars themselves had fallen into the sea.
His face was striking, carved with cold beauty and not a single hint of emotion. Still, something in his eyes gave away the turbulence inside.
He pressed his hand to his chest and got up, making his way to the window. Watching the procession of cars slipping out of the estate, his lips curled into a chilly smirk.
He picked up his phone and dialed. “Donna, my room.”
A few minutes later, Donna knocked at the door, her hands shaking.
“Sir,” she stammered, voice barely above a whisper. “You’re back.”
Devin turned to face her, a slight, unreadable smile tugging at his lips.
“Donna, I was starting to think you asked me back just so you could hide from me. What’s wrong? Planning to play games with me?”
Donna dropped to her knees, the sound loud in the quiet room. She was trembling all over.
“Sir, I wouldn’t dare. You said you’d be back a couple of days ago, but then there was nothing. I thought maybe you weren’t coming at all. And today, when you finally returned, I was too scared to come right away. I’ve been sick these past few days, maybe with a cold. I’m just sleeping all the time, couldn’t even get out of bed. I was just starting to feel better and thinking I should come greet you when you called.”
She paused, voice trembling. “Sir, have you… have you been alright all these years?”
Something dark flickered across Devin’s face. “Alright? You think I’ve been alright?”
Donna kept her head down, not daring to look up. “You still look so young and handsome. It’s like time never touched you… If it weren’t for your eyes, you and Conrad could be twins.”
She hesitated, then asked, “Now that you’re back, you’re not planning to leave again, are you?”
Devin stared at her with cold eyes. “Do you want me to leave?”
He let the words hang in the air for a moment. “I’ve been gone from this house for twenty-five years. There’s no place here for me anymore. So tell me, did you bring me back to use me as your weapon? Who do you want me to get rid of?”
Donna went completely still, but her whole body shook. She should have known he’d see right through her.
She felt a weird mix of hope and dread about Devin coming back. She always knew what kind of man he was, but still, she’d brought this snake back into their home.
Suddenly, Devin’s grip slid from her collar up to her throat, fingers tightening.
“Donna, do you know what Conrad said to me tonight when he saw me? He said he knows you’re the one who invited me back. He said a monster like me doesn’t deserve to set foot in this house again. Tell me, do you think he’s gotten a little too bold?”
Donna’s face twisted in horror. “What? Conrad… he knows it was me? No, no, that’s impossible. I was so careful. I didn’t tell anyone. How could he know?”
Her voice rose to a desperate, panicked shriek. For a moment, she was more afraid of Conrad’s anger than Devin’s violence. In her heart, Conrad was like her own son. If he started to hate her, she couldn’t live with it.
Seeing her on the verge of falling apart, Devin suddenly let out a genuine laugh.
“I was messing with you, Donna. Conrad… well, he sure thinks highly of himself these days.”
