Whoever set this up really went all out, laying a trap as cruel as it was disgusting. Wiona’s hands curled into fists as she waited, calm and collected.
It didn’t take long before a loud bang echoed from the next room, the door crashing open. The fake Annette’s screams pierced through the walls.
“You’ve got the wrong person! It’s not me, I swear, it’s not me!”
Nikolai shot Wiona a quick look. She didn’t even flinch, just sat there like she didn’t hear a thing. He quietly let out a sigh of relief.
Realizing there was no way to stop the five men, the fake Annette started shouting, desperate and raging.
“Wiona, how could you do this? You bitch! This is your fault, all of it! Why won’t you help me? Why are you so heartless and cruel? Please, just leave me alone, don’t come any closer! Wiona, make them stop! You can save me, you know you can! You’re in the wrong room—it’s not me! Why can’t you understand? You weren’t supposed to pick me! Get out, get out!”
She broke down, sobbing and screaming, her voice cracking with panic.
And yet, as loud as the chaos was, the Simpson family didn’t so much as bat an eye. It was as if no one heard a thing. Maybe nobody was supposed to be around this part of the house today. Everyone was probably busy in the front yard, getting ready for the party. Really, there was only one explanation. Someone from the Simpson family had made sure to clear this area out ahead of time, making sure nobody would interfere.
The Simpson family! What a piece of work. Giana, Sophie—there was no way they weren’t involved in this mess.
Wiona took slow, steady sips of her water and sat perfectly still, like she was deaf to everything happening next door. Nothing showed on her face, not a flicker of emotion.
As the noise got even louder, her expression only grew colder. If she hadn’t been prepared, if she hadn’t gotten out in time, she’d be the one trapped and desperate now. So even though she was a woman too, she didn’t feel the slightest bit sorry for fake Annette. All she felt was a cold, growing hatred.
Of course Nikolai wouldn’t risk that. Even if he wasn’t thrilled about it, he turned and kicked Drake, who was still out cold on the floor.
“Hey, get up. Time to move.”
They’d already given Drake the antidote earlier, so he should have been waking up anyway. Drake jolted upright, cracked his knuckles, and followed Nikolai into the next room.
There was a storm of banging and crashing. At one point, one of the men got tossed right out into the courtyard.
Nikolai and Drake worked fast. In less than three minutes, all five men were tied up, gagged, and dumped outside. They dragged Annette in and dropped her right in front of Wiona.
