Madison’s voice crackled through the phone, broken up, but Wiona didn’t care. Relief washed over her. She rushed out the words, “Madison, something’s happened. I’m at the Simpson family’s herb warehouse. Get here as soon as you can, and bring people with you. If Conrad is around, bring his guys too. Please, hurry, I need backup.”
The call dropped right after that. At the same time, someone lunged at Wiona. Nikolai jumped in with a swift kick, knocking the attacker back. He glanced at her swollen belly, urgency written all over his face. “Go inside. Now. No matter what happens, don’t come out.”
Wiona gritted her teeth. “You two be careful.”
She rushed inside, locked the door, and backed up, every nerve stretched tight. Shouts outside grew louder, and the fighting between Nikolai and Drake sounded even more intense.
Then she heard Giana’s voice, sharp and furious. “Stop! What is going on? Are you Sullivan family bodyguards? Unbelievable! You’ve got some nerve showing up here and starting trouble. Where’s Wiona? Get her out here now so she can explain herself!”
Explain? What was she supposed to explain? There was no way she could talk her way out of this. The whole thing was a setup, and whoever was behind it definitely had more tricks waiting.
What she needed was a real witness.
Her eyes darted to the open basement door. She hurried over, supporting her belly as she headed down the stairs. In the dim light, she spotted Annette, unconscious and slumped on a dusty lounge chair.
Wiona rushed over, shaking her gently. “Annette? Can you hear me?” Annette didn’t move. Wiona searched her pockets, but there was no phone. It figured. There was definitely something going on with Annette being here like this.
Suddenly, a loud bang rattled the building. The door upstairs had been kicked open. Someone was coming in.
