Amaya and Sophie had known each other for years. Recently, it was Amaya who introduced Sophie to the Simpson family, and Giana had only trusted Sophie with all their legal affairs because of her close ties to the Sullivan family. But today, Amaya was acting so strangely that it was impossible not to notice. Was Sophie mixed up in all of this, too?
Sophie met Giana’s eyes without flinching, stepping in to defend Amaya. “There must be some kind of misunderstanding today,” she said. “Amaya looked really scared.” She paused, sounding genuinely worried. “But right now, the most important thing is to find my aunt. I’m really concerned about her.”
Giana felt her suspicions fade again. Ms. Clements was a lawyer, after all. There was no way she’d get involved in something illegal. Besides, she seemed so honest, so sincere. The way she cared about Mrs. Sullivan didn’t look fake at all. Maybe Giana was just overthinking everything.
She turned to her staff. “Someone get those two Sullivan bodyguards to talk,” she ordered. “I want to know what Wiona was trying to pull, showing up here with them on Simpson family property.” With that, Giana spun around and stormed upstairs, the sound of her footsteps echoing through the hall.
Amaya stood there, completely lost. But it wasn’t just her. Once Giana was gone, Sophie’s expression shifted, frustration and worry flickering across her face. Her aunt had really disappeared. Amaya had somehow managed to screw everything up this badly.
Giana had definitely suspected her just now. Sophie recognized that look, and it set off all her internal alarms. She could only hope her quick thinking had thrown Giana off the scent for now. But if her aunt was missing, where could she be? Maybe Wiona had gotten her out of the basement before they showed up. Was she hiding in the storeroom upstairs? But that seemed impossible. How could a pregnant woman carry off an unconscious Annette all by herself?
