She knew that if things went south, she’d be the one to take the fall. But what choice did she have? Like Sophie said, she owed her, and honestly, she’d agreed to do this.
Once everyone left, the basement was dead quiet until there was a faint click. A floorboard under the sofa pushed up, and a pair of eyes peeked through the gap. Madison’s eyes.
“They’re gone.” Madison gently lowered the board and turned to Wiona. “Are you okay?”
Their escape down into the hidden part of the basement had been so rushed, Madison was mostly worried about Wiona’s pregnancy.
Wiona shook her head and managed a small smile. “I’m fine.”
“Madison, thank god you showed up when you did.”
Who would have thought the basement actually had a secret passage? Even Giana had no clue there was a tunnel under the warehouse. But it wasn’t just Giana—no one in the Simpson family knew. The only person who did was Madison’s mentor, Kaden, who had dug it himself.
Madison still looked a little shaken. “It’s lucky Kaden made this tunnel all those years ago. He told me that back when he was young, every time he asked Giana for rare herbs, she’d just refuse. So, he got stubborn and did this behind everyone’s back. The tunnel goes straight from the warehouse to the rock garden outside. It was a huge project. He spent months working on it in secret.”
Wiona gave a half-hearted smile. “It’s a good thing no one found it, or I’d have been in serious trouble today.” And she wouldn’t have overheard what Sophie and Amaya said upstairs.
Wiona glanced at Annette, who sat cross-legged with her eyes closed. Madison had put a few acupuncture needles in her, and Wiona had given her a pill to clear her mind. So Annette was actually already awake. After hearing everything that was said above, her face had gone pale, and she’d just pressed her lips together, silent.
Wiona didn’t say anything else. It was enough that Annette had heard the truth. Whatever Annette chose to do next was her decision. As for her and Sophie, things could never go back. Maybe Wiona used to stay out of Sophie’s way, but if Sophie wanted to start something, then Wiona wasn’t about to back down.
Wiona turned to Madison. “If this tunnel leads to the rock garden, let’s get out of here.”
