Wiona, Madison, and Annette finally made it out of the basement. The second Wiona breathed in the fresh air, she caught Sophie’s voice nearby. She couldn’t hear exactly what Sophie was saying. Then came the screams—Nikolai and Drake, in pain.
Wiona’s heart dropped. She went pale and started to step forward, but Madison grabbed her arm.
“Where do you think you’re going? You’re pregnant. You can’t just rush in like that.”
“I know what I’m doing,” Wiona said, her voice shaking.
“If something happens to Nikolai and Drake, I’ll never forgive myself.”
They’d been captured only because they were protecting her. She owed it to them to do the same.
Wiona’s face hardened. “Sophie wants me to show myself. Fine. I’ll go.”
“Today I’m going to face her. I want to know why a lawyer would do something so cruel.”
She didn’t look at Annette, just started walking ahead. Annette reached out and stopped her.
“Wiona, let me handle this,” Annette said softly. “I know you’ve suffered today. I know I’m responsible for a lot of it.”
Wiona didn’t respond.
Annette let out a long, sad sigh. “I know you don’t trust me. I’ve always favored Sophie, treated her like my own daughter. I really did care about her all these years. That’s exactly why I need to be the one to do this.”
Wiona looked at her, eyes cold. “I want Nikolai and Drake safe. And I want Sophie to pay for what she’s done.”
Annette nodded, her voice steady. “Alright. But from here on, you have to do as I say. Can you?”
