Nobody here was an idiot. Why would anyone listen to some lawyer acting like she ran the place? Sophie, fuming, snatched the bottle of pills right out of one of the Simpson family’s hands.
“If you won’t do it, I will,” she snapped.
“Wiona, if you keep hiding, these people could die for you…” Sophie stormed over to Nikolai, ready to hold him down and force the medicine into his mouth.
That’s when a voice shouted from the doorway, sharp and angry. “Stop!”
“Sophie, stop right now.”
“Do you even know what you’re doing? Are you trying to kill someone right here?”
“You call yourself a lawyer?”
“Some lawyer you are!”
“Sophie, if you dare give them that pill, I swear I’ll fight you with everything I’ve got.”
It was Wiona. She had finally shown up, her arm supporting Annette, her belly round and unmistakable. She looked like a mess, her hair and clothes streaked with dirt. Her face was red with fury and exhaustion. She glared at Sophie, like she was staring down a killer.
Sophie just smiled, unfazed.
“Wiona, so you finally came out.”
“Murder? Come on. Don’t be so dramatic.”
“We’re just teaching your two stubborn bodyguards a lesson. How is that murder?”
“If you show yourself, they’ll get the antidote, no problem.”
Sophie paused, puzzled for a second. How had Wiona come in from outside? She’d thought Wiona was still hiding somewhere in the house. Turns out, she’d slipped out a long time ago. No wonder nothing had worked to draw her out. But it didn’t matter now. She was now here.
Sophie’s eyes landed on Annette, still draped over Wiona’s shoulder, unconscious. Relief washed over her, but she covered it up fast. She put on her best worried, angry voice. “What did you do to my aunt?”
“Wiona, let her go.”
