The men from the Simpson family stiffened, faces shifting with shock. Daughter-in-law? Since when did Wiona become Mrs. Sullivan’s daughter-in-law? Mrs. Sullivan only had one son, right? That son was...
Someone sucked in a sharp breath. Suddenly, everyone’s expression soured. All eyes snapped to Sophie. She was the reason for this mess. As Annette’s niece, she had to know what was going on, yet she’d pushed them to cross Wiona. What was she thinking? Accusation and suspicion burned in every glare fixed on her.
Sophie stood frozen, feeling completely alone, every look around her like a silent verdict. She clenched her fists, her face tight with anger and humiliation. “Aunt Annette, Wiona and Conrad are just engaged, and that doesn’t make her your daughter-in-law.”
Donna, who’d always had her own plans for Sophie, had never told her about Conrad and Wiona’s marriage. Sophie was left in the dark, and Annette hadn’t said anything either, trying to spare her feelings. Now Annette wished she’d told her sooner, wished she’d helped Sophie let go before all this happened.
Annette finally spoke, her voice steady and clear. “Sophie, listen to me. Conrad and Wiona are already married.”
She paused, letting it sink in. “And Wiona is pregnant with Conrad’s children. She’s carrying the next generation of the Sullivan family.”
“No matter how much you hate it, that’s the truth. Wiona is my daughter-in-law now. And I don’t hate her. Don’t use me to provoke her or hurt her anymore.”
Annette’s eyes softened just a little. “I do care about you. Sometimes I’ve even favored you more than my own daughter. But all my love has brought me is your scheming and manipulation. I’m really disappointed in you.”
Annette’s reply was calm, but cutting. “Then what is it, Sophie? You used me to get Wiona here. You wanted to ruin her reputation, to turn me against her, to break up her and Conrad. How much further are you willing to go to lie to me?”
Sophie hadn’t expected Annette to know everything. Her heart was pounding, her hands shaking. “Aunt Annette, please don’t listen to her. I could never use you. You’re like a mother to me…”
Annette shook her head slowly. “You didn’t think twice about hurting your own mother, cutting off the Clements family without caring about her feelings. So how much real affection could you have for me? I do feel sorry for you, and I understand how much it hurts to love someone who doesn’t love you back. But after everything you’ve done, I need to think carefully about how I treat you.”
Sophie’s knees almost buckled. She barely managed to whisper, “Aunt Annette, please don’t leave me. Please don’t doubt me. You’re all I have left.”
