Conrad could practically see the wheels turning in Wiona’s head, so he went straight to the point. “My people have been keeping a close watch on Jace and Kellen,” he said, not bothering with small talk.
“I know you did something to make Kellen think she’s pregnant.”
He leaned back, his gaze steady. “After Dr. Monroe vanished, I made sure the hospital stayed quiet. At least for now, nobody is going to expose the fake pregnancy.”
“And about that Salisbury inheritance—Grandma Grace left behind a huge fortune, didn’t she?”
Wiona stared at him in shock, not expecting him to know even that.
She decided there was no point in hiding it. She told him about how Jean had used the inheritance as bait, trying to get her and Jace back together.
“Grandma Grace was scheming until her last breath,” Wiona muttered.
“But I already knew what kind of person she was. I never trusted her, and honestly, I never cared about the money.”
Conrad’s eyes warmed with approval. “You’re smart, Wiona. Level-headed, too.”
“You’ve learned from your past. You know a trap when you see one. Or I might’ve lost you all over again.”
He let out a low, frustrated sound. “I still don’t want to let the Salisburys off easy. That old woman really did a number on you.”
The cold edge in Conrad’s voice made Wiona wonder—if Grandma Grace were still alive, Conrad would probably make her pay for everything she’d done.
She quickly tried to calm him down. “Relax, okay? I’m your wife. There’s no way I’d go back to that jerk.”
“Do I look like someone who’d sell herself for money?”
Conrad’s lips curled into a teasing smile. “So, the real reason you stayed at Hawthorne Hall wasn’t for the hundred million. You just couldn’t resist me, right?”
“You wanted me from the start.”
Wiona blinked at him, speechless.
This man was sharper than he let on.
“Why are you bringing this up now? You think Jace’s meltdown is about the inheritance?”
She frowned, thinking hard. “Could Daniel’s agreement to have Jace and Kellen get married be connected too?”
Conrad nodded. “Grandma Grace really did cover all her bases.”
“My people managed to get a copy of the inheritance paperwork. They found some loopholes.”
“Looks like Grandma Grace worried you might refuse to remarry, so she got clever with the wording.”
“In the end, it says the inheritance goes to ‘Mrs. Salisbury,’ as long as she can give birth to a Salisbury heir. The head of the Salisbury family can manage the assets, but both parties have to sign together to use the money.”
Wiona sat back, quiet for a moment.
Thank goodness she’d never let herself get tempted by that fortune.
