“I knew it. Wiona never cares about me.”
“She never loved me. It’s all fake…”
A fresh wave of sobs shook Alice’s voice.
“Mom doesn’t love me either… and Wiona doesn’t love me… After Connor married her, even he stopped loving me the most. And when their babies come, no one will care about me anymore.”
“People say good kids get candy, but I don’t want to be a good kid. I just want Wiona, I want Connor, I want my mom…”
“I’m just a kid nobody wants. I don’t… I don’t want everyone to change like this…”
As she spoke, Alice let go of the tree trunk. She wiped her tears away, sniffling and hiccuping.
Below her, everyone gasped in shock.
Wiona was so anxious, she forgot how to breathe. She shouted up, “Alice, no matter what anyone told you, it isn’t true! If not for you, I wouldn’t have even met your brother. If not for you, I wouldn’t have stayed at Hawthorne Hall at all. Don’t you know that?”
“To me, you’re my little angel, always and forever. Why would I ever lie to you? It hurts me that you don’t believe me, but I still love you so much. Alice, don’t believe what other people say. You’re growing up, you’re smart, and you can think for yourself, right?”
Alice didn’t reply. She just stared down at the people below, looking lost and a little scared, like someone way too young to understand how the world could be so confusing and cruel.
Wiona’s heart ached for her. She had worked so hard to bring Alice back from the edge, and now, in just one moment, it all threatened to fall apart. In her mind, she cursed Libby over and over.
She signaled for someone to get a ladder. When it was brought over and propped against the tree, she asked Phil to fetch a safety harness.
