Wiona listened from the shadows, her heart pounding. So it really was her. Annette had known right away that Libby was the one pulling Alice’s strings. Clearly, Libby had been whispering things about Wiona for a while, trying to poison Annette against her. Thankfully, Annette hadn’t bought into it completely. She hadn’t turned on Wiona, not even with Libby stirring things up. In that moment, Wiona felt a quiet wave of relief. She’d made the right call in how she handled Annette. At least Annette’s feelings for her daughter were still genuine, even if her love sometimes went astray.
Libby looked up, her voice almost casual. “Well, at least now we know how much this woman really cares about Alice.”
Annette shot her a glare. “So, do you have your answer?”
Libby shrugged. “I do. But it’s not much. All I can say is, she knows how to handle Alice. She knows how to keep her in line.”
Annette let out a sharp, cold laugh. “And what did you want? For Wiona to risk her life and her babies just to prove herself? That would make her an idiot. I wouldn’t want a daughter-in-law like that, and Conrad definitely doesn’t need a fool for a wife. But Wiona knows how to guide Alice. She knows how to pull her back from the edge. She knows how to win people over. Actions matter more than intentions, and I believe Wiona is sincere with Alice and Conrad. Libby, enough already. Stop trying to drive a wedge between us.”
At that, Wiona stepped out of the shadows. Her voice was cool and steady. “She’s right. Enough is enough. Libby, I still don’t get it. Why do you resent me so much? You’re willing to risk the life of a girl you watched grow up, just to prove a point. You’d even use Connor’s unborn children in your schemes. If you have a problem with me, say it right now. This family has enough chaos without you making things worse.”
With Nikolai still recovering and Peter overseas, Tim and Jim were back on guard duty. They weren’t about to let anything slip this time. Even here in the manor, they kept a close eye on Wiona, making sure nothing got past them.
Libby stopped, sneering. “Fine. With her status now, of course I wouldn’t touch her.” She raised her hands and backed away, but her eyes stayed locked on Wiona, full of suspicion and resentment, no longer bothering to hide any of it.
