Alice hesitated, her lips pressed together, not sure what to say. Wiona watched her, disappointment clear in her eyes. “So you don’t want to tell me? Is that it?” she asked quietly. “You really don’t trust me anymore, Alice?”
That hit Alice hard. She wriggled out of Phil’s arms and rushed over, grabbing Wiona’s hand in both of hers. She shook it a little, desperate. “No, that’s not it, I promise, it’s not! I just… I made a promise. I can’t say anything. But I know now, okay? I know you care about me, that you really love me. I get it.”
Wiona smiled a little and tapped Alice’s nose. “So you’re just going to believe anything people tell you? You are clever. You know what’s right and wrong, and you can decide who to trust. Don’t let anyone fool you again, okay?”
Alice’s eyes went wide, worried that Wiona was actually upset. She hugged Wiona tightly, pressing her head to Wiona’s chest. “I’m sorry, I really am. I won’t do it again, I promise.”
Annette stood off to the side, the scene making her feel all kinds of things. She couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. Her daughter had never clung to her like that. At the same time, she was shocked by how much Alice had changed. When did she learn to keep secrets? When did she start having her own thoughts? This wasn’t the girl she remembered.
Wiona cupped Alice’s cheek, giving it a gentle squeeze. “I’ll let it go this time. But if you ever scare me like that again, I just won’t talk to you anymore. Got it?”
