Of course Madison agreed. How could she not? She knew that if Kyle got involved, there was no way they wouldn’t find this woman. Still, neither she nor Wiona ever imagined that after all these years missing, Jewel would turn up in a psychiatric hospital.

The place was old and run-down, but there were a surprising number of patients inside. As Wiona stepped in, Jim and three other bodyguards stayed close, practically forming a wall around her. Madison clung tightly to Wiona’s arm, not letting anyone get close. Even Kyle kept glancing back at them, and when the hospital director came out to greet them, Kyle said, “Please take extra care of us.”

The director didn’t need to be told twice. He quickly ordered the staff to clear the hallways and get all the patients back inside. Only when the coast was clear did everyone finally relax a little.

The girl in the photo wore a pink beret, looked young, stylish, and full of life. The woman in front of them now wore a faded hospital gown, her hair tangled and streaked with gray. Her face was tired and hollow, and she looked at least fifty. It was like looking at a completely different person.

Kyle started explaining. “I went through Dad’s bank records. He’s been transferring a hundred thousand dollars here every year, starting exactly twenty years ago. I came here and asked about anyone named Jewel, but they said there was no such patient. So who was he paying for? I went through the hospital’s old photo albums myself. That’s when I matched her face. They changed her name and her identity. She goes by Pearl now. No one’s ever visited her. But I’m sure it’s Jewel.”
