“Then you can slip into the Sullivan family and help Conrad take care of Wiona’s kid. We can take our time, plan every step. Start with your aunt. Yes, you need to keep winning her over, just like before…”
Sophie stared at her mother, who seemed even more desperate than she was. A bitter laugh slipped out as her face contorted with anger. “That’s enough! So you’re here to speak up for Annette? Don’t even mention her to me! She’s the one I hate most right now.”
“For the past ten years, I’ve spent as much time with her as I have with you. I gave her everything. And for what? She pretended to care about me, but when it mattered, she still chose her own family. How long has Wiona even been with the Sullivans? Annette trusts her completely, just like that. I’m nothing but a joke to her. All these years, I was just her little pet. If she was in a good mood, she’d be nice to me. If not, she’d toss me aside without a second thought.”
Sophie’s whole body was tense with hatred. Her anger at Annette had reached a boiling point, even stronger than what she felt for Wiona.
Mrs. Clements looked completely stunned. “Sophie, how can you talk like that? Didn’t she come to see you just yesterday? I saw how much she cared. That wasn’t fake.”
Sophie shot her mother a look filled with contempt. “Do you even know why I’m like this now? She’s the one who poisoned me at the Simpsons’ house. I was in so much pain I thought I would die. I begged her for help, but she didn’t care, not for a second. And you really believe she loves me? She didn’t even come to see me yesterday. She came to threaten me, to make sure I wouldn’t expose the truth about Wiona’s divorce or say anything online. She called it a chance, said Conrad and Wiona might let me off if I kept quiet. If she actually loved me, would she treat me like this?”
Sophie forced herself to stand, shaking with rage. After everything she’d been through, she finally saw things clearly. She’d been betrayed and left behind by everyone who mattered. She wouldn’t hold back anymore. She would make them all pay, make them beg at her feet for forgiveness, pay for every bit of humiliation they’d put her through.
…
Wiona gazed out the car window at the building. She turned to Madison, needing to hear it again. “This is the place?”
A white building stood tucked behind a rusty old iron gate. The whole area looked like it had been forgotten by the world, remote and run-down. A sign by the gate read: Harmony Hills Psychiatric Hospital.
