“Are you sure it was her? Did you really check?” Wiona paced, her voice low with tension.
Molly nodded, serious as ever. “Pearl, the girl who cleans the third floor, told me herself. She was outside, polishing a vase, and overheard everything.”
“She said Alona called at five, insisted the new furniture be delivered that very night. She demanded it couldn’t wait, said it needed to be ready after the afternoon nap.”
Wiona stopped, her thoughts swirling. “Alona really has a vicious heart.”
Molly looked at her, worried. “What do you mean, ma’am?”
Wiona shook her head. Some things just couldn’t be said, not even to Molly. She didn’t want to drag her into this mess. But deep down, she knew exactly what Alona was up to.
It didn’t matter if Kellen’s allergies were real or fake. Anyone who stepped into that room would be hit by that terrible smell, thanks to the cheap furniture Alona ordered. It was so strong, there was no way it was just formaldehyde.
Kellen would never put up with it. She’d complain to Jace, and Jace would never let her stay in a toxic room. But what other rooms were left on the second floor?
Only Jace’s room and Wiona’s own.
No matter how Jace tried to work it out, it would cause problems. If he gave Kellen his room, he’d have to move into Wiona’s. Kellen wouldn’t be happy. Jace couldn’t exactly sleep with Kellen in front of everyone, either.
There was only one outcome. Wiona would get kicked out of her own suite and forced into that awful guest room.
Alona really knew her son well. In this family, if Jace had to choose between Kellen and Wiona, he’d never choose her. No matter what happened, Alona would always win.
A cold shiver ran through Wiona. She placed a hand over her belly. If she’d been her old self, always swallowing her anger and letting things slide, what would have happened? Maybe saying all three of them would die was too much, but those babies inside her would never be healthy.
And if the babies weren’t healthy—could she even carry them to term?
Alona had no idea the babies weren’t Jace’s. She was willing to risk her “grandchildren” without a second thought.
Molly’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Ma’am, should we go talk to Grandma Grace? She’d definitely stand up for you.
“Jace really went too far this time. You’re still the lady of this house. How could he throw you out for someone else?”
Molly’s anger only grew as she spoke, ready to storm off to Grandma Grace that very second.
“Someone else?” Wiona let out a bitter laugh. “In his eyes, Kellen isn’t an outsider.”
She was the real outsider here.
In Jace’s mind, Kellen was the true mother of his children. Wiona was just a stand-in.
It wasn’t long before everyone in the house knew Mrs. Salisbury was reading and resting in a tent in the garden.
When Alona heard, she just sneered. “Hiding? She can hide out there during the day, but does she really think she can sleep out there at night?”
She turned to her trusted maid, Kristal. “Jace really is my son. I don’t even have to do anything and he keeps pushing Wiona further away.
“Soon enough, the baby in her belly will be gone.”
Kristal frowned. “But what if… what if Mrs. Salisbury really stays in the garden? I checked that room. The smell is awful.”
Alona scoffed. “Is she crazy? If she doesn’t want to stay in that room, can’t she just pick a guest room on the first floor?
“No matter what, it works for me. If she stays in that room, she’ll get sick and lose the baby. If not, Jace and Kellen will have the whole second floor to themselves. It’ll be easy for them to get close right under Wiona’s nose.”
Alona smirked. “All I have to do is set it up so she catches them together. She’ll lose the baby. How hard could that be?”
“All that work finding the cheapest, nastiest furniture will pay off.”
While Alona was busy gloating, Kellen was upstairs, lost in her own excitement. She couldn’t help running her hands over everything in the master bedroom, the one that belonged to the lady of the Salisbury family.
