Paige swallowed hard, her throat tight.
Wiona’s face looked so much like his. The features were softer, sure, but the resemblance was almost uncanny. Just seeing her made Paige’s heart twist with memories she’d tried to bury. He had been dazzling back then, impossible to ignore, the kind of person who caught every eye in the room.
And now, staring at Wiona, those old memories came rushing back—especially the ones she wished she could forget.
She forced herself to focus, locking eyes with Wiona. On the surface, Wiona seemed perfectly calm, but Paige couldn’t shake the feeling that there was a flicker of hostility beneath that polite expression.
Paige narrowed her eyes, staying on guard.
“Did you… know me from before?” she asked.
Wiona lifted her hands, palms up. “No, never. I mean, I visited Easton Heights before, but this is honestly the first real contact with anyone from the Thompson family.”
Her tone was light, but there was something about the way she said it that made the Blue brothers glance at each other. It almost sounded like she was hinting at something else. Her first real contact? So there must have been an indirect connection before.
Aside from Ryan, the brothers shared a quick look. Wiona had brought up the Thompson family more than once. They were pretty sure something must have happened between her and the Thompsons—and whatever it was, it didn’t sound good.
Wiona didn’t seem to care what her cousins were thinking. She just smiled, cool and unbothered.
“I’m not here about my mom’s inheritance,” she said.
“And please, don’t misunderstand Mateo. He just thought I might’ve messed up and accidentally offended everyone, so he was trying to stand up for me. He never meant to interrupt.”
She turned to their grandmother, still wearing that innocent look. “Grandma, please don’t blame Aunt Paige, either. She’s just worried about Mom’s inheritance. She didn’t mean to interrupt you.”
Wiona’s face was all wide-eyed innocence, but inside, she was smirking. She’d gotten pretty good at handling people like this—just a little bit of sweet talk and people showed their true colors.
Sure enough, Paige’s face went pale.
“What—what are you talking about?” Paige stammered. “I never interrupted… And I’m not worried about your mother’s inheritance!”
“Whatever you’re back for, it’s none of my business!”
“You… stop making things up!”
Wiona’s words had rattled Paige so badly, she couldn’t even get her sentences out straight. She was furious, her cheeks burning, unable to hold back anymore.
But before Paige could launch into another tirade, Grandpa Stephen’s voice boomed across the room.
“That’s enough! Be quiet!”
He glared at Paige. “Since when do you get to speak up here?”
Paige looked like she’d been slapped. She’d always known her in-laws weren’t fond of her, but getting chewed out so brutally in front of everyone was a first.
She stood there, humiliated, her cheeks blotchy, tears slipping down as her whole body trembled.
She had nowhere to hide. All eyes were on her.
“How could you… say that…” she choked out, turning desperately toward her husband.
She wanted Carter to defend her, to stand up and say something—anything. But Carter just looked at the floor, his face ashen.
“Dad, it’s my fault. I didn’t manage her well enough,” he said quietly. “Wiona, I apologize on her behalf.”
He didn’t wait for a response. He grabbed Paige by the arm and started pulling her out of the room.
Paige fought him every step. “Why are you apologizing to her?”
“What did I ever do wrong?”
“I didn’t do anything wrong! Let go of me! I want to make this clear! What did I do that was so terrible? Why does the Blue family have to humiliate me like this?”
