Divorced and Pregnant My New Life with a Billionaire Drives My Ex Crazy novel Chapter 79

A huge crash exploded behind them.

The black van had tried to cut them off and slammed into another car, but it didn’t slow down for long. It was right back on their tail. Conrad checked the rearview mirror. There was no more doubt. They were being followed.

He almost tried to lose them with another risky move, but instead he lifted his foot off the gas, slowing down. He quickly activated the car’s smart system and dialed Korey.

“Mr. Sullivan?”

“Someone’s following me.”

“I’m near Central Avenue. Get here fast. Bring people.”

Korey’s voice shot up. “What? Are you okay, sir?”

“I’m fine for now. Just hurry.”

Conrad ended the call, then glanced at Wiona in the backseat. She looked completely miserable, like she was regretting ever getting in his car tonight. Even so, one hand was pressed protectively over her stomach. She clearly had no love left for her husband, but the babies meant everything to her.

Her face was pale and she looked like she was about to be sick. Conrad knew he couldn’t keep this up. A high-speed chase was dangerous enough, but with a pregnant woman in the car, it was asking for disaster. He didn’t even notice how gentle he was being.

The Bentley, worth a small fortune, darted between cars, swerving and speeding up, each move shaking off the van a little more. Still, the black van kept catching up. Conrad realized if this went on, both Wiona and the babies might not make it out alive.

He pulled up the navigation, scanning the nearby streets. He needed a plan. Slowing down, he made it look like he was getting desperate.

At a downhill intersection, Conrad suddenly swung the wheel. The van seemed to anticipate it and lunged forward, aiming to ram them. Conrad whipped the Bentley into a hard drift, turning sharply just in time to avoid the hit. The car bounced onto the bike path, scraping painfully against the wall.

Luckily, the street was almost empty now. Conrad sped down the path and ducked into a narrow alley. By the time the van caught on, the Bentley’s taillights had already vanished.

Wiona finally lost it and threw up. Conrad grimaced and pulled the car into a shadowy corner. He hopped out, hurried around, and helped her out.

“Come on.”

He left the car behind and led her into the darkness of the alley. Wiona was shaky and weak, but she managed to ask, “You lost them. Why are we leaving the car?”

“I think they spotted me back at the hospital garage,” he said.

She nodded, catching on quickly. “So you think there’s a tracker on your car?”

Conrad shot her a look, surprised. “You’re quick.”

Then he remembered who she really was, and shrugged it off.

“Thanks for the compliment, but honestly, I think I can go my own way now,” Wiona said, leaning against the wall to catch her breath. “They’re after you, not me.”

Wiona’s stomach twisted painfully. She gritted her teeth, forcing herself to keep moving. She couldn’t afford to slow Conrad down.

Her eyes darted around, searching for any way out.

Suddenly, she felt weightless. She looked down, startled, and realized Conrad had scooped her up in his arms, holding her tightly.

“Sorry, Ms. Morgan,” he said. “This will be faster.”

He didn’t ask. He didn’t hesitate. Cradling her close, Conrad took off at a sprint.

The wind whipped past them. Wiona buried her face in his chest, her warm breath brushing his neck and making him tense. He glanced down at the woman in his arms, then focused ahead, moving like a predator through the darkness.

Clearly, these men had been waiting a long time for this chance. Tonight, Conrad was finally alone, and they’d come out of hiding like wolves.

As soon as Conrad made it out of the alley, another group of men in black surrounded them.

“Mr. Sullivan.”

“Last time, your people hurt us. Tonight, you get to see how it feels.”
