Was he terrified she would run away again? Wiona's heart was entirely impartial. Even though she acknowledged Madison had hurt Tatum in the past, marriage was a massive commitment that shouldn't be rushed. That was why she had suggested they take some time to cool off before negotiating further. After all, what woman could accept being forced into keeping a relationship one day, only to be dragged to the city hall the very next morning?
Determined to help her best friend, Wiona had offered to have Mason whisk Madison away, guaranteeing Tatum wouldn't find her for a while. Yet, inexplicably, Madison had refused.
"I'll try to talk him out of it tomorrow," Madison had said. "I'll stall for as long as I can. I don't want to be tied down by him like this. I can already imagine how miserable my life will be."
Madison hadn't wanted to completely burn bridges with Tatum. However, she had severely underestimated his ruthlessness. Madison couldn't even recall how she had ultimately surrendered. All she knew was that she now possessed a marriage certificate in her bewildered grasp.
She showed it to Wiona, her face crumpling as if she were about to sob. "Wiona, I was too overconfident. If I had known, I would have just run away with your help." She was consumed by bitter regret.
Wiona was equally flabbrgasted. Tatum's execution was terrifyingly efficient. She only just learned that to prevent her from interfering, Tatum had sneaked into Madison's room before dawn and whiskered her away. The eight o'clock appointment had been a total lie. He was truly something else. This was Wiona's courtyard, guarded by their own security, yet he had managed to spirit a person away right from under her nose without raising a single alarm. But the deed was done, and Wiona was powerless to change it. Ultimately, Madison's own complacency had been her downfall.
Wiona crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes at her friend. This silly girl definitely wasn't entirely repulsed by Tatum deep down. Otherwise, she wouldn't have rejected the escape plan last night under the guise of trying to reason with him, practically handing him the opportunity to drag her to the city hall. She simply hadn't realized that subconsciously, she was giving him a chance. Perhaps she truly felt guilty and wanted to make amends. Or perhaps... there were other lingering feelings involved.
Wiona decided not to point this out directly. Instead, she took Madison's hands and said earnestly, "Hey, if you think about it, you're not getting a bad deal here. Tatum is tall, broad-shouldered, and looks like he stepped right out of a painting. Plus, his family background blows all those superficial Stonehill families out of the water. With this marriage certificate, your family can't force you into any more arranged marriages. Why don't you just try living with him for a year and see how it goes? We can cross that bridge when we get to it."
