Brian carefully studied the breakdown of the bill. He gulped and turned to Adrian, asking, "One hundred thousand dollars to rent your McLaren Senna?"
Adrian shrugged and responded, "You do realize I let a trash ride my car, not just one but two. It's going to undergo a thorough disinfecting."
Out of the corner of Brian's eye, he saw Riley chuckle, but she quickly covered her mouth to hold her amusement.
The succeeding bullet points were the salaries of his men. Clint, the assistant, got a whopping bonus of one hundred thousand dollars to play the part of Claire's suitor. The rest had ten thousand dollars each.
Brian glanced at Clint, who stood by the door the whole time. The assistant remarked, "Mr. Martin, Claire had nearly drugged me. I deserve premium pay for risking my life."
All Brian could do was take another deep breath. He returned to study the breakdown and saw how Adrian included the function room rental, gas, and paperwork. Some of it was given to Riley. After all, she had a role to play in this game.
Adrian took the biggest cut, billing four hundred thousand dollars as the master planner of the project he named 'Take Down the Trash.'
Then, at the end of the bill, he added his attorney's acceptance fees. Adrian said, "There will be another bill, depending on the length of your court hearings. It won't be cheap, but my lawyers are the best in the city."
Brian gasped profoundly. He silently asked, 'Should I object?'
Who was he kidding? Without Adrian's help, he would not get the evidence to prove that the child in Claire's stomach was not his.
He sighed and agreed, "Fine. Fine."
Adrian opened his phone and gave Brian a QR code to his bank. He said, "Pay up now."
'The fuck,' Brian cursed inside. Adrian wasn't wasting any time.
Brian reluctantly called his bank to inform them he was making a significant transfer. Then, he wired the money to Adrian's account.
Just then, a food attendant came in, serving snacks and fresh juices. Brian said, "I'm not really hungry. I want to go to Claire's house and see Mara's arrest myself. My parents should also be there."
"Well, Riley is hungry, so we ordered food," Adrian revealed. "You are paying for this, by the way."
Brian glanced at Riley. She was serving herself with spaghetti while holding back her laughter.
Should he get mad? No, this was a very little thing he could do for Riley after all the aches he had given her. He took out his wallet and left a thousand dollars. He said, "I think this should cover it."
"One other thing, Brian," Adrian called. "You must give Riley back the rights to her designs. I'm willing to buy the designs because I understand that they were made by your company."
"Either way, Brey Jewelry is shifting to producing low-cost designs," Adrian pointed out. "Keeping Riley's designs will only conflict with your new targetted market."
Yet again, Brian hesitated, but he still considered his faults towards Riley, so he answered, "I'll send you the bill."
"You are not allowed to bill me excessively," Adrian said firmly.
"But you can?" Brian questioned.
"Of course!" Adrian reacted. "I make more money than you. Every minute wasted over your trashy mistress costs money."
"Okay, fine. I'll let you know when the papers are ready." Brian was about to walk out. He wavered but managed to say, "Thank you for everything."
"I'm glad you know gratitude," Adrian said. "When all this is over, Brian, remember that I helped you."
Brian did not dare find Riley and Adrian. He did not want them to know his desperation. After an hour of waiting, Zia finally turned up at her office.
When she opened the door, she said, "Brian, what are you doing here? Why did the staff let you in?"
"I'm your cousin," Brian reminded.
Zia rolled her eyes. She asked, "What do you want?"
"Did you check on Riley?" Brian inquired.
"Yes, why?" Zia asked back.
"Is she pregnant?" Brian asked.
Zia looked Brian in the eye and said, "It's still early, but based on gestational age, yes, three weeks. Her HCG blood test came back positive."
"I'm happy for Riley. She had always wanted to get pregnant, and now she is," Zia smiled. The best part is that she is pregnant with the right man."
Hearing the news, Brian felt his chest congesting. Sure, he was happy for Riley, but it was painful. It was so unbearable that tears welled in his eyes.
"Fuck," he cussed, wiping away the wetness on the corners of his eyes. "I'm so fucked up, Zia! I'm so fucked up!"
"Hurts, doesn't it," Zia said. "You had her. You were happy, but you just had to cheat. This life lesson will forever torment you."
