Upon arriving at the hospital, Adrian instantly ordered Zia to attend to them in the ER. “Zia, I think Riley is pregnant. Check on her, please.”
Zia’s eyes rounded. She excitedly asked questions about Riley’s menstrual cycle. After a while, Zia said, “It would be too early to do a scan. If you are pregnant, all we can see is an empty sac, but we can do a blood test. Then, return after two weeks for an official ultrasound.”
“Okay,” Riley raised her arm and said, “Draw my blood, doctor.”
Zia was efficient. She had the laboratory run the test and returned after twenty minutes. Then, she lazily walked towards Riley and Adrian.
“Oh, nice. Slow motion,” Clint remarked on the side, his tone teasing. Zia, who had not noticed him there, ended up frowning at him, her expression a mix of annoyance and amusement.
“The results,” Zia said while giving the envelope to Riley.
Riley’s heart raced as she opened the results. She glanced at her husband and bit her lip before finally flipping the paper.
“I’m pregnant!” Riley announced. She jumped off her bed to sit on Adrian’s lap and embraced him tightly. “I’m pregnant! I’m pregnant!”
Riley wept. Her chest was overwhelmed with happiness that her tears would not stop pouring.
It wasn’t long ago that she had lost her baby. Having a child had always been her dream; now, it was coming true again. This time, with a better man.
She felt Adrian caress her back. He kissed her cheek and almost any part of her face within his reach. He said, “I’m going to be a dad. We are going to be parents.”
“Just so we are clear, though, we are in the early stage based on Riley’s menstrual cycle, around three weeks, so much care is needed.” Zia smiled and said, “I understand that Riley is already taking folic acid, right? I’ll add a few more supplements for Riley to take, and then I’ll see you in two weeks!”
“This is good news, Boss,” Clint remarked. His smile reached his ears.
“Excellent news,” Zia echoed. “Such great news,, we might get a raise!”
“Cougar?” Riley responded. “You make it sound like you are forty. You are just four years older than Clint.”
“Age doesn’t matter,” Adrian said.
“I told her that already,” Clint pointed out.
“Oh, so there is something,” Riley teased.
Zia wound up flushing while Clint only laughed. Riley gave them the chance to talk it out by saying, “Well, you know what? You two should celebrate getting a raise!”
Riley got up from Adrian’s lap and said, “Adrian and I are going to see Mom and tell her the good news, and then we are going home to tell Grandpa.”
“You are dismissed,” Riley said with a big smile.
