Riley and Adrian arrived early at Halliport University's Grand Alumni Homecoming. The couple wore matching clothes. Adrian wore a light blue suit, while Riley wore a darker blue business attire.
Clint also came to assist them, walking behind Adrian.
Adrian was meant to give a speech, so he had to meet his old professors before then.
The university's pentagon grounds had been elegantly transformed into a ballroom-like venue for the occasion. A stage, a grand tent, chandeliers, and other adornments added a touch of grandeur. Temporary flooring and carpets covered the concrete, and well-decorated tables and chairs were scattered throughout.
"Mr. King, we are so glad you made it!" An older woman happily approached them. Even from afar, Riley recognized her marketing teacher, the same one who had unknowingly brought her and Adrian together.
"Mrs. Sanchez, I am happy to attend," Adrian greeted.
Mrs. Sanchez was now the university's dean. She and another school professor discussed the program's flow with Adrian, but Mrs. Sanchez kept eyeing Riley the entire time.
Adrian must have noticed it too, so he introduced, "This is Riley, Allen. Do you remember her, Mrs. Sanchez?"
The dean smiled at Riley and said, "Of course I do, Mr. King, I was just -"
"She and Brian Martin separated." Adrian smiled and declared, "Brian found a new wife, so I married Riley."
"Oh!" The dean rounded her lips in shock. Then, she laughed. She revealed, "You know, I had always thought the two of you would end up together, but Riley married Brian -"
"I was in an accident when the two of them got close," Adrian interfered.
"Yes, I remember," Mrs. Sanchez said, teary-eyed. "Well, you know what they say: if it's meant to be, you find your way back to each other. I'm glad to see you both together."
After Adrian was given an orientation, they went backstage, but Riley thought she was wasting time. She noticed several people had arrived and settled down, which was the perfect opportunity to begin sharing Adley.
"Hun, I think I should be out there," Riley suggested. Of course, she had worn one of her favorite diamond pieces to catch everyone's attention.
"Clint, accompany my wife," Adrian instructed.
"No! I'll be fine!" Riley insisted. "I'm going to do some sales talk."
Riley did not give her husband a chance to oppose. She kissed him and rushed off the stage to meet old friends.
She began distributing her business card to professors and acquaintances she had met. Many did not necessarily remember her as Brian's wife, which was great. However, after about fifteen minutes of going around, she walked past a table where a group of individuals completely knew her.
"Riley! Riley Allen?" Hearing her name, Riley was forced to turn around. She locked eyes with an old friend, Krista.
Yes, old friend. Krista used to be Riley's close friend in college. However, when Riley became friends with Brian and Adrian, Krista started ignoring her. When Riley dated Brian, Krista talked about Riley behind her back. Riley did not have to be a genius to know Krista was jealous of her.
"Over here, Riley, I saved a seat for you!" Krista said with a big smile.
It was funny how Krista saved the seat at the same table where Brian was. Worse, Claire was there, tucked in Brian's arms. Brian's circle of friends and their wives were there. They were all staring at her awkwardly as Krista kept calling her.
"come here, Riley! Let's catch up!" Krista called loudly, obligating Riley.
In any case, meeting Brian again was bound to happen. Thus, Riley raised her chin and marched confidently toward their table.
"Hi Riley, how are you doing?" Luke, an old friend of Brian's, said.
"I'm doing great, Luke. Thanks for asking," Riley said back with a friendly smile.
"Riley, I heard you and Brian got a divorce," Krista pointed out as Riley took her seat.
With a proud smile, Riley answered, "Yes, we have." She pointed at Brian and Claire and said, "As you can see, Brian now has a new woman."
When Riley said that, Claire clutched onto Brian's chest as if she was hurt. Her eyes narrowed, and she heaved in fear.
"By the way, Riley, Brian, and Claire are married. Did you know?" Krista inserted. Even with Mark, Luke, and Jean glaring at Krista, she rubbed it in Riley's face.
"Oh?" Riley glanced at Brian. She said, "Congratulations, Brian." She turned to Claire and added, "Congratulations to you too, Claire. You both deserve each other."
"Claire is so beautiful., young and slender," Krista remarked. "No wonder Brian married her!"
"Oh, Krista, don't you know? A pretty face gets old. A nice body will change, but one's character and achievements fortify a woman's beauty as her youth fades," Riley said confidently.
Her words earned her praise from Brian's friends, including Jean. She said, "I agree!"
Krista looked pissed. She was about to say something when a man asked Riley, "Is this seat taken, gorgeous?"
Riley rolled her eyes. She placed her bag on the empty seat beside her and said, "Yes, this seat is taken."
"Too bad," the man said before leaving.
"Who is the seat for, Riley?" Jean asked.
Before Riley could reply, the host on stage announced, "Ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Halliport University's Grand Alumni Homecoming, year 20XX."
Everyone's attention was on the stage. Momentarily, Krista had forgotten to insult Riley. There was so much said in the opening, but eventually, the host introduced the night's first speaker. "We welcome one of our most achieved former students, Mr. Adrian King!"
Everyone gave a loud applause, including Riley. She had a big smile on her face as she clapped her hands.
"God, even in a wheelchair, he looks fucking hot," Krista remarked.
Riley frowned. She commented, "He is not just hot. He is smart and -"
"Adrian is married, Riley," Brian interrupted. "Don't even think about going after a married man."
