“Even I sacrificed my hopes for your relationship,” Adrian said. “But what should we do now? When clearly, you broke that promise.”
Adrian’s lips twitched. He said, “I’m here to collect.”
“Wow, this goes deeper than I thought,” Jean remarked before fanning herself with her hand.
Once again, Brian noticed the dismayed expressions on his friends’ faces. He wanted to uphold himself but struggled to find the right words. Brian looked down at Claire, who was equally lost at the situation, and when he saw her growing belly, he had a lightbulb moment.
Brian said to Adrian, “Riley couldn’t give me a child. It was her duty as a wife to give me the family I desired.”
“Oh, but it did not start from there, did it?” Adrian commented.
Eventually, Clint returned. He had a big bag in his hand. Brian could not fathom his restless heart. He earnestly feared whatever contents were inside.
Adrian’s assistant, Clint, sat next to him. Clint gave him the first set of documents. Brian noticed that Riley tugged on Adrian’s suit jacket. The man said, “He has to know.”
Riley looked away as if pained by whatever news Adrian was about to give him.
“You said Riley could not get pregnant?” Adrian asked. “I have news for you. A day before you asked Riley to sign the divorce papers. She lost your child because you hit her in the door’s hallway of your parent’s home!”
Adrian thrust a folder in Brian’s direction, shocking him. ‘What did he say?’
Brian looked down and flipped through the medical reports of The King’s Medical Center. He read the word “miscarriage.” Seeing his cousin’s signature below the certification made it even more dumbfounding.
‘Riley had a miscarriage? And Zia had known all along?’ Brian mused wide-eyed.
His face turned ghostly white as he reread everything. The date stamped on the document was precisely the exact date when he had his lawyers finalize their divorce settlement.
“I know! I cheated on you and hurt you, but it’s nothing compared to what you have done, Riley!” Brian pointed out Riley’s mistakes.
Riley tried to assert, but Brian cut her off each time. Even when Brian had called Zia, he was unwilling to hear news about his legal wife.
“Do you even know what’s going on with Riley, Brian?” Zia asked.
“I don’t care about Riley right now! I only care about my child!” Brian snapped.
### END OF FLASHBACK ###
Looking back, Brian realized it was true. He didn’t listen to Riley.
