Camilla’s words hit Barnard like a slap. He actually felt his dignity getting ripped away and tossed right at the feet of the older couple. The faint hospital lighting made his face look even more twisted and miserable than it already was.
Ines, hearing Camilla, just clutched her chest even tighter and wailed. “You wicked girl! Sure, you’ve got a pretty face, but you had to use it for something like stealing Davina’s man? Do you have no shame at all?”
But shouting barely scratched the surface for Ines. She grabbed at Barnard’s sleeve, yanking at it so hard it looked like she wanted to tear him apart piece by piece.
Barnard could barely keep it together. He pushed her hand away, annoyed and loud. “Can you stop? Can you please just be quiet for one second?”
Right now, Davina was still in surgery. Her pregnancy had already been exposed in front of Camilla, which was a disaster for Barnard, and the last thing he wanted was to deal with Ines too.
But nothing was stopping Ines now. Her voice just kept getting louder. “Afraid of people watching? If you cared about shame, why bother seducing Davina in the first place? Did you two finish off all my son’s compensation money already? Oh my god, this is unbelievable! I’m calling the police. Old man, get your phone. Call the police right now. Get them arrested, both these cheaters!”
Davina’s father-in-law, Odom, might have said nothing all this while, but he listened to every word from Ines. He fumbled for his phone, but before he could dial, Barnard grabbed it out of his hands. “Haven’t you done enough yelling? Can we just talk like normal people? Do I look like someone who needs your son’s little bit of compensation money?”
Barnard had never been this humiliated. His suit alone cost more money than these two could probably even imagine, not to mention his watch and everything else he was wearing. But this couple couldn’t care less about brands or money. All they could do was throw out ugly words, calling him and Davina cheaters and gold-diggers, and that made Barnard want to disappear completely.
Finally, Ines gave him an up-and-down look, eyes full of suspicion. “If you’re not after the compensation money, why would you be with a widow whose husband just died? Davina’s got nothing except that money. She’s what, a decade older than you? You look pretty decent. If it’s not for the cash, then seriously, why are you with her?”
Why, indeed?
Camilla tried hard not to laugh. It was so obvious to everyone but Barnard—he and Davina were a mess together. Anyone could see it. Except for Barnard himself, who kept running headfirst into this situation he’d made for himself.
He tried to keep his voice steady, but it was brittle. “This is a hospital. You can’t yell here. If you want to talk, let’s go somewhere else.”
Even though Davina hadn’t come out of surgery yet, Barnard had reached his limit—he couldn’t take the embarrassment.
He reached out, trying to guide Ines and Odom away. But Ines just sat down on the ground, refusing to budge. “You want us alone so you can shut us up for good? Forget it! I’ll say everything right here where everyone can hear me. If you’re not afraid of what you’ve done, why are you afraid of people knowing? Somebody help us—can anyone tell us who’s right and who’s wrong?”
Barnard’s head was pounding, and seeing Ines’s white hair, he didn’t dare lay a finger on her. The last thing he needed was to hurt her and make things worse. No matter what he said, she refused to listen.
The standoff stretched on, everyone trapped in place, until Calvin arrived. He came in with a whole team of bodyguards, clearing everyone from the hallway, blocking off the scene so only the old couple remained surrounded.
