Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 206

“Doesn’t matter who you use, honestly. Anything’s better than begging the wife to step down. At least you won’t lose all your pride.”

She tossed the words out carelessly, sarcasm curling around every syllable as she pointed Davina toward another way out.

Davina’s eyes flicked back and forth. For a second, they seemed dull and lifeless, but then they sparked. Her whole face shifted, bright with calculation.

The sharp cry of an ambulance sliced through the air outside. Camilla rolled her eyes and sounded bored. “Whatever happens to you today, it’s got nothing to do with me. Don’t even think about trying to drag me down with you again. If you do, I’ll make sure you never get to be Mrs. Carter.”

Davina was still picking apart Camilla’s warning in her head. Even as the EMTs lifted her onto the stretcher, she didn’t bother to answer.

Camilla wasn’t about to tag along to the hospital for some hand-holding. She’d already pointed out the road Davina needed to take. Really, no matter how clueless Davina pretended to be, she had to get the message by now.

Maybe she didn’t even need to wait for the official divorce papers to say goodbye to Barnard.

It was harshly bright in the hospital. Davina got wheeled into the OB-GYN’s office and went through another round of tests. The doctor didn’t bother hiding her irritation. “Davina, I told you last time… Your pregnancy was already risky. Even if you tried to keep it, there’s no guarantee this ends well for the baby…

Now things are even worse. I really think you should consider your options.

If you choose an abortion now, we can keep the damage to a minimum. But if you wait and the fetus gets any bigger, it’ll be a full-on induced labor. That could mess up your body permanently.

You know you’re not exactly young anymore. Pregnancy at your age is already dangerous, and you…”

Davina cut her off and slid a thick stack of cash from her purse, pressing it into the doctor’s hand. “Enough. I know what I’m doing, so just keep the baby safe. Spare me the lecture.”

Last time she’d landed here, drifting in and out in the surgery room, the doctor had said the same thing. She’d begged them to save this baby, no matter what.

She was already too old to take any more chances. If anything happened to her or the baby, there was no telling if she’d ever have another.

The baby was her only bargaining chip now. Even with the child, the Carters already weren’t thrilled with her, but if she lost it, she’d never even set foot in that house.

So no matter what it cost, she needed this baby to stay safe inside her until she officially got the Carter name.

Barnard checked his phone and saw dozens of missed calls, all from an hour before—mostly Davina.

He figured it out right away. She must’ve run off because he hadn’t answered.

Just thinking about it made his head pound.

Davina clung to him so much, it was suffocating. If he was out of her sight for more than a minute, she’d blow up his phone, needing to know exactly where he was. Ever since she got pregnant, it was ten times worse. She really seemed to think she could only breathe if he was beside her.

Camilla had never acted like that.

Back when Camilla was pregnant, she’d gone to almost every appointment by herself. She told him she understood he was busy—honestly, when she was seven months along, she’d even make him hangover soup after his late nights.

Comparing now, Barnard suddenly realized how badly he had treated Camilla. She’d been the responsible, perfect wife. That’s the kind of person he should be with, not someone like Davina, who only knew how to cry or throw a fit at the worst times.

Barnard paused outside the hospital room. He took a deep breath, tried to collect himself, and finally worked up the nerve to walk in.
