Barnard and Davina were at each other's throats, neither one willing to back down. Their voices filled the living room, sharp and relentless.
Calvin had his hands full with the whole alien situation, and he wasn’t in the mood for any more drama. Without a second thought, he pulled Barnard away and marched him into the study, leaving Davina behind.
Davina slumped onto the floor, tears streaming down her face. Laura stared at her for a long moment, then sighed, unable to keep her thoughts to herself. “If this were Camilla, she’d be figuring out how to fix things instead of just sitting here crying.”
Laura had never really felt close to Camilla, but watching Davina now made her realize what she’d taken for granted. Work aside, and even putting ability on the backburner, at least Camilla never made her mother-in-law chase after her about what to wear, and she definitely wouldn’t let something so trivial turn into a family embarrassment. The Carter family’s reputation wouldn’t be on the line because of her.
The more Laura thought about it, the more annoyed she felt. She gave Davina a final, sharp look before heading upstairs.
Davina stayed curled up on the ground, crying even harder.
Camilla. It was always Camilla. Even after all the effort it took to become Mrs. Carter, Davina still couldn’t shake Camilla’s shadow. She looked around the empty room and at the tightly closed study door, and a hint of resentment flashed in her eyes.
After Calvin jumped in, things online quieted down pretty fast. The photos of “aliens” still floated around, some even becoming memes, but at least the chaos had settled.
When Camilla woke up the next morning, the internet had calmed down. She glanced at her phone, spotting a couple of missed international calls from Daniel’s assistant. This was a big client she’d landed back when she was with The Carter Group, and their deal was one of BLC’s largest. There were still follow-up projects in the pipeline, too.
Her past interactions with Daniel had always gone smoothly. Since he moved back to his country, he hadn’t found a single fault with her work. So seeing all these missed calls from his assistant definitely set off alarm bells.
She called back, and the assistant quickly explained. There was a problem with her last batch of designs. Daniel was furious and wanted to break off the contract with BLC.
This kind of thing couldn’t be sorted out over the phone. The assistant insisted Camilla fly to Ostrovia as soon as possible to smooth things over with Daniel in person.
Daniel was one of BLC’s biggest clients. Losing him out of the blue would be a disaster for the whole company.
But…
Camilla checked the time. Tomorrow was the day she and Barnard were supposed to go finalize their divorce. If she left for Ostrovia now, she’d never make it back in time.
She hadn’t asked Dahlia to pick Jasper up. Lately, Jasper had been doing a lot better, spending his days with Elise at the hospital and usually going home with Susan at night.
Just thinking about him ending up at Dahlia’s all of a sudden made Camilla uneasy.
Jasper replied, “It was Magee. He told Dahlia to pick me up. He came over today, and I heard them fighting. I…”
Before he could finish, Camilla heard Dahlia’s voice coming from the background. “Jasper, are you still awake? I thought I heard you talking in there. Who’s on the phone? Is that Camilla?”
There was a soft creak from the door, and Camilla could hear their voices mingling. Then Dahlia spoke directly into the phone, her voice clear and reassuring. “Camilla, don’t worry about us here. It was just a little thing. Everything’s fine now, really. Focus on your work.”
“Did Magee cause trouble for you? Dahlia, if he—”
“Oh, he’s not a problem. I’m not that little girl anymore. Seriously, Camilla, go do what you need to do. Jasper’s safe with me, you have nothing to worry about,” Dahlia said, her voice warm and confident.
