Davina let go, her eyes filling with hurt.
Daisy was sniffling, her shoulders shaking as she peeked at Calvin. She didn’t dare say a word.
Calvin couldn’t stand watching these two act so pitiful, but he asked anyway, “So what exactly happened to Barnard? Why did a dog bite him for no reason?”
Davina’s face got even more miserable. “It was Camilla. You know that house next to us in Saddlebrook Estates? That’s hers now, with her new man. They have a dog. Today, Camilla came back to move her stuff, and we just happened to run into her. Out of nowhere, that dog went crazy and bit Barnard.”
“I just know Camilla holds a grudge and probably taught the dog to go after us. Dad, I promise this isn’t our fault. Please, you have to stick up for us.”
Her story mixed truth and fiction, offloading all the blame onto Camilla, and her tears seemed so real.
Calvin’s face went stiff as a board by the time she finished.
How humiliating.
The Carter family’s heir, randomly attacked by a dog. That alone was enough to become the butt of every joke.
And instead of handling things, Davina was there crying and running to him for help. She was helpless.
And now she wanted him to fix everything. How? Was he supposed to go grill Camilla for not controlling her dog after it bit his son?
How was that any different from a parent butting into a kid’s playground scuffle?
Calvin felt his pride shrivel.
He shot Davina a look. “Call the police. Let them handle this.”
“That dog that bit someone should be taken away and put down.”
Calvin wanted nothing to do with this mess, and he sure didn’t want to look weak by letting this go, so he went for the safest route.
Davina muttered agreement. Calvin glanced at her, still unsettled, then turned to Laura. “You go with her. Camilla’s got to pay for this.”
Laura nodded timidly, then asked, “Calvin, can I see Barnard first—”
“He’s not going to die from a bite. Just go take care of this,” Calvin snapped.
On one side was useless Davina. On the other, wishy-washy Laura. Both gave Calvin a headache. Honestly, Camilla used to be the least trouble out of all of them.
But no…
His son had the weirdest taste, treating a diamond like it was nothing.
