Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 278

She didn’t even glance at Calvin. She swung her bag over her shoulder and headed straight for the stairs.

Calvin just sat there on the bench, hand pressed to his chest, trying to steady his racing heartbeat. It took him a while to calm down. Finally, he turned to Laura and said quietly, “Just send her the money.”

Since that woman had washed her hands of the Carter family, she hadn’t shown one bit of sentiment. With the intimidating Charles family backing her now, Calvin really didn’t want to invite more trouble.

Laura looked at him, hesitated, then finally said, “But… honey, we hardly have any cash left. Whatever’s left has to go toward Barnard’s wedding.”

She trailed off, rambling about holiday expenses, family obligations, things coming up at the end of the year… but bottom line, they just didn’t have the ten million.

Calvin growled, “How did it come to this? Where’s all the money gone?”

Laura let out a sigh. “Didn’t Barnard make a mess of things a while ago? Keeping scandals out of the news, calming down the board, projects stalling when partners left after the stock crashed… None of that is cheap.”

She looked at him seriously. “Honey, the truth is, we’re really out of money.”

Things had been so quiet on the surface lately, Calvin had almost forgotten about all the earlier messes. With Laura reminding him, his mood soured and his shoulders slumped.

Laura said softly, “That Camilla… she knows exactly what’s going on with Carter Group. Barnard has already run into her once, and she didn’t ask for anything then. She waited until now to demand everything at once. She picked this exact time because she knew we couldn’t handle it. What are we going to do?”

Calvin looked over at Davina. “That woman’s smart. We just have to get through this. The wedding venue isn’t decorated yet, right? We’ll take the money from that budget and settle things with her for now.”

Davina’s face fell. “Dad, you can’t. You said my wedding with Barnard is about more than just the two of us. It’s about the Carter Group’s image.”

“How can you say that to me?” Calvin snapped. “If you’d just kept Barnard in check and stopped him from sneaking off to meet her, none of this would be happening. That’s it. We’ll do it that way. As for the wedding…”

He gave Davina a look, his eyes pausing on her pale, tired face. “Let’s not bother with a custom dress,” he said at last. “No amount of fancy stuff will make a difference for you. Instead, go abroad, pick a designer brand, and quietly rent a dress. No need to make a big deal out of it.”

He was talking to Laura, but the words cut straight through Davina. She went pale.
