“Out to eat?” Camilla frowned, a little thrown off.
Jasper grinned. “Yeah. Lance said he picked a restaurant and… he wants to introduce someone to you. Mom, I’ll wait for you downstairs.”
Lance wants to introduce me to someone?
Camilla didn’t actually know anything for sure, but something in her gut had a hunch about who it might be.
Her thoughts were spinning. By the time she snapped out of it and headed downstairs, she’d already put on flawless makeup and slipped into a pair of high heels she almost never wore.
Downstairs, Lance was laughing and goofing around with Jasper. When he spotted Camilla, his whole face lit up. “You’ve been back this long, and only now am I throwing you a proper welcome dinner. That’s on me. I hope you’ll forgive my bad timing and let me make it up to you.”
Dane, who was lounging in the living room, heard Lance laying it on thick and just shook his head, sighing as he looked away. He absolutely couldn’t watch this scene.
Honestly, if Lance actually had a tail, he would probably be wagging it so hard he could take off. Lucky for everyone, Darwin wasn’t around. If he ever saw their fearless troublemaker acting so eager to please in front of Camilla, he’d probably blow a gasket.
Dane threw out a few polite remarks, then walked them out to the car.
This time, Lance didn’t reserve a private room or anything. He picked a Western restaurant with a cozy vibe. Candles flickered on the table, the air carried a clean, woodsy scent, and the dim lights made everything feel soft and inviting.
They had just sat down when a woman in a champagne-colored dress walked in. Her dark hair was loosely braided to one side, with a little white lily-of-the-valley headband nestled on top. She really did look like a delicate little flower swaying in the breeze—thin, almost fragile.
Lance took his seat beside Jasper, leaving the spot next to Camilla empty.
He didn’t sugarcoat a thing, and totally ignored the feelings behind Sarah’s little confession.
Sarah’s shoulders dropped and she shot Camilla a mock-glare, half pouting as she grabbed her arm for help. “See what I mean? He’s awful sometimes. I really don’t know what you saw in him.”
She talked to Camilla like they were old friends, totally at ease and with no walls up.
Whatever doubts Camilla had felt earlier, they faded after meeting Sarah in person. Sarah was upfront about having a crush on someone else. It was clear as day that she and Lance were just family, nothing more. Definitely not like Davina, who always seemed to have some angle.
That light freesia scent hadn’t changed at all, but to Camilla, it suddenly felt a whole lot sweeter.
