Chaos had already descended on the wedding before it even started.
Laura managed to avoid disaster by the skin of her teeth and finally got the carpet down right before the ceremony began. Everything looked perfect, the time was almost up, and soft, romantic music drifted through the hotel lobby. Guests and reporters started trickling in one after another.
Calvin had made sure the live stream was on from this moment. Most of the people attending were business partners with The Carter Group. Lately, there had been nonstop rumors claiming The Carter Group’s money was all tied up and that the Carter family was about to flee the country. Their partners had been on the fence, waiting to see what would happen.
But now, with Calvin putting on such a grand wedding for Barnard, those doubts started to fade. The partners began believing the Carter family’s public statements after all.
The ceremony was about to start. The bride and groom would enter any minute. That was finally Laura’s cue to check on Davina.
Laura hurried back to the dressing room and found the makeup artist just standing there like she’d seen a ghost. She was so pale, she looked sick.
A bad feeling hit Laura hard. She rushed over and saw Davina standing in the doorway. She wasn’t wearing the luxury dress Laura had chosen for her. Instead, she’d swapped it out for a cheap-looking red dress that screamed clearance rack.
And her makeup…
It was a disaster. Her cheeks were shellacked with blush, too thick and uneven, giving her a dirty, almost clownish look. Her lips were caked in so much lipstick it looked greasy and shiny, as if she’d just finished a horror movie blood scene.
Laura froze. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest, her breath coming up short. She clutched at her chest and her voice shook. “What happened? I told you to keep an eye on her. What did you let her do to her face?”
The makeup artist jolted like she’d just woken up. On the verge of tears, she looked absolutely miserable, as if she’d witnessed the worst makeup job in her entire career.
Forget Laura’s anger for a second. Just being the official makeup artist at the Carter wedding was big news in their industry. Now there was no time to fix anything, and letting Davina walk out looking like this would be career suicide. Everyone would blame her, and she’d never work again.
Desperate about her future but still trying to keep Laura as a client, she explained miserably, “Laura, it wasn’t my fault. After you left, Davina suddenly insisted I get her some water.
