“What do you mean she can’t change? Why not?” Laura pressed, her patience already running thin. Before Davina could answer, Laura’s gaze landed on the disaster in front of her.
The wedding dress Laura had splurged on, spent a small fortune just to borrow, was now crumpled on the floor. Lipstick and makeup were smeared all over the skirt. It was ruined, completely unwearable.
And the ceremony was about to move to the bride and groom’s entrance—there was no chance of getting another gown in time.
Laura’s knees felt shaky. She leaned back against the wall, a hand pressed to her chest as she tried to catch her breath. She just stood there, stunned.
The makeup artist hovered off to the side, awkwardly silent, but inwardly she couldn’t help but pity the Carter family. Why would they want to marry someone so impossible to handle?
Suddenly, the music outside shifted. That was the cue. Time for the bride and groom to walk in.
Laura had no choice. Gritting her teeth, she asked someone to help Davina to the entrance. She herself couldn’t bring herself to move. She just stood there, stuck, mortified.
The humiliation was too much. It was overwhelming. Laura couldn’t even begin to imagine what kind of scene Davina was about to cause.
But the show had already started. All the guests were seated. The event had been hyped online for days. It was way too late to call anything off. At this point, they just had to get through it.
Or maybe not.
Maybe there was still something she could do. Laura scrambled for her phone, hands shaking, desperate to call Calvin. She needed him to cut the livestream as fast as possible.
If their business partners saw this mess, whatever, let them gossip. They all worked in the same circles. Sure, people would talk, but it wouldn’t go further than some private jokes. But if this scene went out live for everyone to see, the Carters would become the talk of the city for all the wrong reasons.
Laura dialed Calvin over and over, but he didn’t pick up. Panic rising, she hurried out of the room in search of him.
By the time she made it back to the main hall, chaos had taken over.
Whispers and chatter filled the air, buzzing louder and louder.
Davina stood awkwardly alone on stage. The warm wedding music couldn’t even cover up the loud gossip all around.
Listening to the guests, Laura finally put the pieces together. Barnard had run away.
