After work, people were packing up and getting ready to go when a sudden uproar exploded by the entrance. The whole crowd was stopped dead at the door.
A bunch of big men and women, sleeves pushed up and arms crossed, were blocking the exit. No one was getting past them.
Some of the girls who got done early looked scared out of their minds, faces drained of color. “Who are you guys? What are you doing here?”
It was the kind of thing they’d only seen on TV, like those groups of migrant workers demanding their wages during the holidays. But this was a high-end jewelry company, not some shady place that skipped out on paychecks. No one could figure out what this group was after.
“Your boss is Camilla, right?”
“Where is she? Tell her to get out here!”
“She’s already divorced and she still has the nerve to steal someone else’s husband? Today, we want to see for ourselves just how shameless she can be!”
The crowd hurled accusations before Camilla had even shown her face.
The young receptionist frowned. “I think you’ve got the wrong idea. Camilla would never steal someone’s husband. That’s just not who she is.”
“You’re not her so why are you talking? You think with this many people here we could all be wrong?”
“Exactly. Like she’d actually tell you if she was messing around with someone else’s man?”
“Just get your boss out here. If she doesn’t come out, none of you are leaving tonight.”
The group sounded more and more confident, and some of the staff inside started to feel unsure.
Bonnie came out just in time to see the mess. She shot the group a cold look. “Don’t come in here trying to stir up trouble. As far as I know, Camilla’s boyfriend is single. How could she be stealing anyone’s husband?”
“What do you know? We’re not talking to you. Get your boss out here or no one’s leaving.” That came from Davina’s aunt, the loudest of the bunch, and she wasn’t interested in listening to anyone.
These were farm people, strong and stubborn, way tougher than office workers. When they started pushing in, the security guards at the door were completely outmatched.
