Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 339

Shirley’s face tightened, worry shifting quickly into anger as she listened to Sarah. She slapped her hand on the table, her voice going sharp. “Sarah, seriously, what do you want me to say to you? Tessa’s crazy about you. You’re basically part of the Charles family already. Why are you bending over backwards to please that woman?”

Sarah hesitated, almost shrinking into herself. “I mean... she’s the one Lance likes. I just don’t want things to get weird between us. Besides, Shirley, no matter how sweet Tessa is to me, I’m still just a guest in the Charles family. It’s not the same for her. If she ends up marrying Lance, she’ll be the lady of the house. I’d have to answer to her. I figured... maybe it’s better if we get along now. That way Tessa won’t end up stuck in the middle.”

Her voice was soft, almost whispery, with a careful edge that you couldn’t help but feel for.

Shirley had always protected Sarah, ever since they were little. She was so used to seeing Sarah look fragile that her heart went out to her all over again. Reaching out, she squeezed Sarah’s hand and kept her voice low and gentle. “Sarah, I really think you’re overthinking it. Tessa adores you. Even if that woman really does marry Lance, Tessa will still be on your side. She’d never let you get bullied. There’s just no reason for you to go out of your way for her.”

“You’re just too nice, always swallowing your feelings. Honestly, you should tell Tessa what’s going on. If you can’t say it yourself, let me take you home and I’ll talk to Tessa for you.”

Sarah bit her lip. “Maybe... maybe just let it go. Tessa, she...”

Shirley’s frown deepened. “Sarah, I really don’t get why you’re hesitating. Since you got back, you’ve been trying so hard with that woman, but has she ever treated you right? Think about it. She’s the one trying to get into the Charles family, not you. She should be worrying about impressing you, not the other way around. Why put yourself through this?”

For a second, Sarah didn’t answer. Shirley sighed, a little annoyed. She thought Sarah was just too gentle. She had the family behind her, but she refused to use it, only letting herself get hurt.

“Is there something else you’re not telling me?” Shirley leaned in, her eyebrows raised. “Sarah, we’ve been friends forever. You can talk to me.”

Sarah finally opened up. She looked away and spoke quietly. “When Tessa first brought me home, she hoped I’d marry Lance. If I bring any of this up to her, she’ll definitely... Well, Lance is with Camilla now. I really don’t want to mess up their relationship. Please, Shirley, can we just drop it?”

Shirley’s mouth fell open. “Wait, so Tessa actually wanted you and Lance together? That means while you were out of the country, Camilla swooped in and ended things between you and Lance. She stole your fiancé. And you’re still trying to be nice to her? Sarah, that’s just... it’s honestly pathetic.”

It took her a moment to process. Up until now, Sarah hadn’t admitted that the family wanted her with Lance. It was always Shirley daydreaming, thinking they’d be perfect together since they grew up side by side.
